About Anantha V Nagarajan, Phd

Highly motivated, quick-learner with a skill set ranging from experimental synthesis and characterization (UV-Vis, FTIR, TEM/SEM, Polarimetry) of optically active colloidal nanostructures to atomistic modeling of (electro)catalytic processes on novel nanomaterials using computational chemistry tools (Density Functional Theory, Time-dependent Density Functional Theory). Extensive experience as lead computational researcher on collaborative projects with experimental chemists in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry and nanomaterial synthesis. Graduate studies and projects involved the multi-scale modeling of various chemical processes through the use of software such as ASPEN Plus, COMSOL and Matlab.

    • Led computational efforts on multiple collaborative projects with experimental groups at Carnegie Mellon University and National Energy Technology Lab for sustainable fuel and energy production. The collaborations resulted in the discovery of highly robust electrocatalysts through a combination of experiment and theory.• Elucidated the electronic structures of novel, atomically precise nanostructures (APNs) for electrocatalytic applications using computational chemistry tools such as density functional theory (DFT). Insight from the electronic structure analyses improved experimental designs.• Performed extensive DFT calculations on high performance computing (HPC) environments to rationalize experimentally observed high electrocatalytic performance of APNs. Coupled with systematic thermodynamic analyses, DFT calculations were in excellent agreement with experiments.• Supported future catalyst discovery for experimental groups by designing a computational framework for the accelerated screening of new APNs using data sets generated via ab-initio calculations.
