About Rita Lopes

Hi, I'm Rita. I'm a Senior UX Practitioner with a Graphic / Product / Fashion Design background. I was a Multi Disciplinary Designer since 2005 and realised I wanted something different. I've always wanted to make the world a better place, help people make the best of what they have and fix things generally, so I was naturally drawn to human centered design. By doing the online IDEO course twice, I realised it's what I've always wanted to do. I then took a User Experience Design Immersive course and I've been working as a UX professional ever since. I enjoy working collaboratively in multicultural and diverse teams, within both established companies and startups. What I really love is putting people at the forefront and going through the UX process, to understand needs and design great products, which have a positive impact and make a real difference in people’s lives.I'm normally the person who has sparkling eyes when talking about UX design and research, and I've done my fair share of demystifying and explaining the value of UX, across the various departments in whichever company I'm working in, as well as bringing clients into the UX frame of mind. Get in touch to have a chat about the projects I've been involved in.

Over the course of twelve years I went through various stages of seniority and responsibility. I started out as an intern where I was given small design tasks, mainly for prints and flyers. I was then offered a position as a part time designer and photographer of vintage items, which I tagged and added to a visual online library. I moved onto being a full time junior designer and carried on through mid-weight to a senior position. Throughout the years I developed graphics for wallpaper, ceramic tiles, fabrics, haberdashery, canvasses, posters, brochures, a hardback book, homewares, gardening accessories, large scale murals, web, packaging, branding, art direction for photo shoots and back to fashion with uniform projects.Whilst on my senior designer role I took on various responsibilities, such as being lead on major client projects and mentoring juniors and interns. During this role I completed two Human Centered Design courses by IDEO and began to implement the values and processes into the projects I was leading. This resulted in two staff uniform projects where I prepared, conducted and oversaw large-scale user research and staff engagement, analysis and iteration. We listened to and involved the end users throughout the entirety of the process, which resulted in staff being able to feel like they co-designed the very garments they wear every day in the job. This was immensely satisfying so I decided I wanted to deepen my knowledge of the subject and realised that being a UX designer would allow me to create the same positive impact for every project I’m involved in.
  • Art Project For Art Neuro
    Artist / Designer
Art Project For Art Neuro Oct 2014 - Nov 2014
    Londres, Reino Unido
I was asked by a friend (who was doing an art piece for this project) to replace one of the artists who was unable to carry on with her piece.I met with Sarah, the artist I was replacing, to hear what she had developed and decide if our ideas could be merged. We had a great chat, however, my ideas didn't match hers entirely so I decided to do my own project from scratch. She liked my ideas so I was happy to carry on with those!I also met with the scientist I was paired up with, Barbara, to learn about her work and how I would incorporate it into my piece.I decided to do a series of transparencies that show the tumour's development and potential remission. I used real images of cells that Barbara provided from her lab cultures and included those in the graphics I created. I wanted them to look like hanging x-ray sheets so I did a side view and a top view. I also added captions which provided a timeline for each process and had an insight to the patient's symptoms, thoughts and feelings. In order to see the details clearly and create some interaction I made faux "magnifying glasses" which had a white background. The show went really well and people really seemed interested in interacting with the piece. Some of the visitors had strong emotional reactions to the piece, which I hadn't anticipated. It was an interesting experience for me as it was the first time I exhibited my own work since University and I'm looking forward to doing it again.
