I am a journalist by training who got a Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences from Université Catholique de Louvain, in Belgium, with vast interdisciplinary and international experience both as a communication practitioner, educator, and researcher.As a journalist, I worked in NGOs, grassroots organizations and corporate foundations mainly in the field of children's rights, poverty elimination, citizen empowerment, and nature conservation. These experiences included creating successful institutional communication strategies from scratch and exciting action packages for reaching a diverse public. I have also trained hundreds of professionals and volunteers in communication in community-based organizations and NGOs of different sizes and scopes. In a nutshell, I'd say that I know how to translate scientific or policy-related information into accessible languages and appealing formats.However, it was my strong analytical quality that drove me from the practice of communication and social change to the research in this field. I have written several analytical reports about the development and results of actions implemented to improve children's rights, protect nature and expand communication rights. Since 2013, I have moved to academia and have been studying the ways in which communication can lead to more inclusive, democratic, healthy, and caring societies.I am currently a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Institute for Media and Creative Industries at Loughborough University London, after serving as a Doctoral Prize Fellow, a prestigious fellowship to which the university selects and supports highly skilled early career researchers to impulse their career development. My current research deals with media initiatives in indigenous communities in Brazil and Ecuador, analyzing political imagination and political voice. I am permanently interested in the study and practice of communication related to social change, power asymmetries, media appropriation, participation in democracy, and civil society development, particularly focused on Latin American societies. Together with Professor Thomas Tufte, I have been leading a series of activities around the global legacy of the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire in communication, development, and social change.
