I have over ten years of research and consulting experience as a structural and earthquake engineer. My work has focused on linear and nonlinear structural modeling using both simplified and advanced finite element codes, static pushover and seismic response history analysis, performance-based evaluation and design of retrofitting schemes, and experimental quasi-static cyclic and shaking-table testing of a variety of structures, including masonry and timber, reinforced concrete, and steel structures. My experience included seismic vulnerability and risk assessment, retrofitting, and structural seismic design. I have co-authored two books, edited another one and authored/co-authored over 100 technical papers published in prestigious journals and conferences; dealing with experimental testing for characterization of construction materials and structural systems, and development of finite element programs for nonlinear structural analysis. I have addressed some of the challenging issues in seismic analysis and design including nonlinear modeling of reinforced concrete weak beam-column joints including rebar slip exhibiting member fixed-end rotation, seismic upgrade of vulnerable reinforced concrete structures using local and global retrofitting schemes, nonlinear modeling of fracture-critical welded steel moment frame connections, derivation/validation of seismic design parameters, seismic risk assessment of a portfolio of structures, and estimation of earthquake losses (deaths, dollars, and downtime). As a structural engineer, I use my research and consulting experience to develop cost-effective, construct-able, and sustainable structural design solutions that satisfy the essential requirements of applicable codes and standards. Prior to joining Moffatt & Nichol, I was a visiting research scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. I also taught at UET Peshawar. I graduated from Pavia's ROSE School with a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in structural and earthquake engineering. I received Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawar with the highest honor. I am a professional engineer (Structures, PEC) and registered engineer (EIT) with the State of California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
