Graduate Research Assistant

Eugene, Oregon, United States

Einstein's description of diffusion ignores the effects of the shared environment of the diffusing particles, which should lead to failures in predicting the statistics of extreme diffusion, i.e. the particles which have moved the farthest from where they originated. I designed an experiment to track diffusing microscopic silica beads to explore extreme diffusion and help create a new description of this behavior. My current work involves timing the arrival of photons from a pulsed laser passing through a scattering medium. This experiment tests the limits of some radiative transfer methods commonly used to describe scattering light and extract information about the system.I helped my advisor mentor an undergraduate researcher as they participated in a 10-week REU program working on one of my projects. I also spent a summer mentoring local community college students as they worked on research under various physics and chemistry principal investigators.I have served on the physics department's Graduate Admissions and Graduate Studies committees, and as a 2022 Orientation Committee co-chair. I currently participate in the department's Climate and Diversity Committee and the Graduate Support Group.

Mentor

Eugene, Oregon, United States

I mentored five interns from Lane Community College as they worked in research labs here at the University of Oregon - providing guidance, a point of connection, and a general resource for them in a new environment. I also taught a handful of workshops to help them find their career paths and learn valuable skills for the future.

Jun 2023 - Sep 2023

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Eugene, Oregon Area

I was a graduate employee working as a teaching assistant in the Department of Physics.

Sep 2019 - Apr 2021

Adjunct Faculty

I taught Introductory Applied Physics I, a non-calculus-based course in physics. I had to effectively communicate physics principles to students new to the subject. I was responsible for lecturing and providing coursework, lab activities, and exams for my class. Outside of the classroom, I mentored for a student-led ozonesonde project in the High Altitude Research Team during the winter 2019 semester. In summer of 2019 I collected atmospheric particulate matter data. I organized weather balloon flights to send a handheld particulate counter to the stratosphere to collect data regarding the concentrations of various particle sizes with respect to altitude. This data will be useful for future student projects regarding the atmosphere.

Jan 2019 - Aug 2019

Teacher'S Aide

I assisted professors with introductory physics labs and classes, attending classes and the drop-in physics tutoring lab to provide extra help answering questions and addressing concerns. On occasion, I covered a class so that the professor could attend a meeting or other engagement. I taught weekly labs and ensured everything ran smoothly so the students could have an optimal learning experience. I graded homework assignments, lab reports, and helped grade exams.

Apr 2016 - Dec 2018

Founding Project Lead/Systems Engineer

Brigham Young University - Idaho

Rexburg, Idaho

I worked as the founder and project lead for the High Altitude Research Team in the Department of Physics. I worked with faculty and students in STEM fields to build a high altitude weather balloon team from the ground up. I performed systems engineering work to ensure all our equipment and individual projects work cohesively and that we, as a team, are prepared for each flight. I presented my work in December 2017 at the BYU-Idaho Research and Creative Works Conference, winning best in session for oral presentations. I was also awarded first place in a poster session at the Idaho/Utah American Association of Physics Teachers sectional meeting in February 2018. I wrote my undergraduate senior thesis on the work I did to create the research team, as well as on the data and media we collected during the 2017 total solar eclipse.

Apr 2017 - Mar 2018

Intern

Center For Space Nuclear Research

Pocatello, Idaho Area

I worked on a team with other interns to model the thermal and chemical diffusion in the PuO2 fuel pellets used in multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generators.

Jun 2018 - Aug 2018

Peer Advisor

Byu-Idaho Career And Academic Advising

Rexburg, Idaho

I assisted students with career and academic planning, which involved advising students in decisions regarding their education and future careers and helping them plan for graduation.
