• Monitor the occurrence of tick-transmitted diseases, primarily in rural communities of central and NW Minnesota; including Lyme Disease, Human Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Powassan Virus.
• Interview over 1,000 patients by phone call who are confirmed cases of Lyme disease according to the case definition and to hundreds of confirmed and probable cases of other tick-borne illnesses
• Enter data of reported clinical information, recall of symptoms and relevant home and non-home exposure information into MDH’s data storage system MEDSS to be used by the department for statistical analyses to generate.
• Provide educational support to patients by answering questions, responding to requests and coordinating with the department’s epidemiologists as needed

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

• Investigated a hazardous plume of improperly disposed perfluorochemicals (PFCs) that were produced by 3M at its Cottage Grove facility from the late 1940’s until 2002; they have infiltrated the surrounding groundwater.
• Collected, labeled, and delivered water samples from private wells in the East Metro area with suspected contamination to be tested for PFCs
• Educated the public about PFC contamination and associated health risks
• Collaborated with laboratory services and partners at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to schedule, manage and prioritize sampling areas and to ensure accurate data and record keeping

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

• Assessed environmental impacts of various treatments by collecting and analyzing soil effluent to find the most effective method for maximizing crop yield while minimizing damaging effects on the environment
• Presented and spread awareness of global and local health issues through interactive educational events at local community centers; including overviews of original research
• Measured crop yield results for synthetic fertilizer and compost treatments which were tested for significance against untreated control plots
• Mentored underprivileged high school students to expose them to research in a college setting and provide useful experience for future success
• Grew a variety of vegetables to donate to food shelves, be sold to the university’s cafeteria and to be offered at affordable prices in an on-campus student farmer’s market
