My field of research is plant physiological ecology and biogeochemistry. The focus is on interactions between plants, microbes, atmosphere and soil in terrestrial ecosystems. Processes are studied in non-managed arctic/alpine, temperate and tropical ecosystems, supplemented with experimental manipulations in growth chambers, and in the field. The aim is to reveal the consequences of environmental changes such as global warming, nitrogen deposition or changed land use on biological diversity and processes involving soils, plants and microbes, from root/leaf level to ecosystem level. Current activities focus on experimental studies of effects of climate change on nutrient and carbon cycling in arctic and temperate ecosystems.I am presently involved in large scale projects investigating:1) Effects of climate change on vegetation and ecosystem services in Danish heathland (CLIMAITE), funded by the Villum Foundation2) Climate change impacts on carbon and nitrogen cycling in subarctic ecosystems, funded by the Research Council for Nature and Universe (FNU)3) Interactions between plants, soil, microbes and atmosphere in areas with permafrost, in Center for Permafrost (CENPERM), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation / Danmarks Grundforskningsfond.
