I deal with real-world data, often with large and correlated uncertainties, and figure out the best ways to use them. The flagship theory of physics at the smallest distances is known as the Standard Model. It describes with remarkable accuracy almost all the phenomena we see in the tiny quantum world. However, we know that the Standard Model is not the final answer. It doesn’t account for gravity, for the dark matter that makes up most of the mass in the universe, or for the dark energy that seems to cause our universe to expand faster and faster. And it doesn’t explain how large-scale structures like planets and stars can have formed after the Big Bang—according to the Standard Model, matter and antimatter should have been created in equal amounts and then annihilated each other into pure energy. But something tipped the scale, making all the antimatter disappear and leaving enough matter to create us and everything we see when we look out into space. What was that thing? We don’t know, but we know that it involved certain differences between matter and antimatter that we refer to as CP violation. We have observed CP violation in laboratories like the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, and my research focuses on how to squeeze the most information possible out of these observations. And I don’t stop at the data we currently have available—a big part of my work is coming up with strategies and roadmaps, identifying what we should be measuring in the future to get the biggest bang for our collective buck.
