I switched from the simulation software (SS) team to one of our embedded software (ESW) teams during a staff reorganization; the goal was to split up the large ESW team into multiple smaller scrum teams to allow for more efficiency/flexibility. The ESW team needed more product owners to run the scrum teams, and given the success of my SS team, I was asked to join ESW. Along with the usual product owner responsibilities, I've been working with other product owners to improve cross-functional collaboration, improve planning and coordination between ESW scrum teams, and working with our Jira admin to organize our Jira project.

As product owner of the simulation software team, I made a lot of improvements to the team's efficiency including streamlining the code review process, improving the request process for testbed runs and analysis, and reducing unproductive time in meetings. I worked with my team members to make sure they got to work on assignments that aligned with their strengths and interests, provide input on important team decisions, and were overall happy with how the team was operating.

I realized that GNC software was not quite the right fit for me, but I really enjoyed software development. I decided to switch into software engineering and made another out-of-state move to Denver, Colorado. I worked as a software engineer for the simulation software team whose code ran in the HWIL test environment and acted as back up for our team's scrum master. I started making improvements for the team in this role by creating reference material for new and existing team members.

I joined the GNC team to get experience in a more technical role, performing analysis and developing updates to embedded software algorithms. Since I'd been working on the same program in systems engineering, I had a lot of the bigger picture, background knowledge that made me a valuable asset to the team when dealing with requirements and verification. The team lead was new to the program, so I worked closely with him to bring him up to speed on details about the program. I acted as scrum master and deputy lead, running the team while our team lead was out, mentored new team members, developed reference documentation, and created new tools for routine analysis tasks.

My first engineering job involved moving out of the San Francisco area in California to Tucson, Arizona, where I took a job in systems engineering. I started out working on requirements analysis and updates for our program's software team, conducting trade studies, and generating requirement performance metrics. I worked closely with our signal processing and GNC teams to develop new algorithm performance requirements, and ended up helping with some code updates when they didn't have enough engineers for the work. I investigated a set of requirements with long-standing problems and was able to find the cause, and then got the opportunity to update simulation software to fix the problem. When we brought on new members of the team, I mentored them in learning the system and program processes. Additionally, I acted as an ambassador for several new hires to the company.
