GEO is a leading a worldwide effort to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). It links existing and planned Earth observation systems and supports the development of new ones where gaps exist in the support of environment related information. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬I provided technical and scientific support for capacity building activities in the GEO Work Program and led the implementation of AfriGEOSS– the Africa focussed GEO initiative. This included reinforcing synergies among global, regional and national earth observation efforts in Africa, harmonising existing program efforts within GEO and AfriGEOSS objectives and promoting open data access and sharing. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬♦ Approaching and motivating the community to actively contribute to the GEO Work Program, elevating the African agenda in the continent and internationally and improving participation in GEO by 60% ♦ Organizing the first AfriGEOSS Symposium with attendance from 130 participants representing 27 countries to discuss the role of earth observation in the implementation of African sustainable development policies ♦ Raising awareness of how access to data and infrastructure dissemination can help address global key issues including food security, forest management, urban planning and water resource management♦Engaging key stakeholders to bring the AfriGEOSS initiative to the political sphere, resulting in a mandate from the 26th African Union Summit. Umvoto Africa is an earth sciences consultancy, specializing in environmental resource development, management and sustainability. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬In this role, I took accountability for the company’s overall program planning including allocation and coordination of resources. I oversaw project budgets and cash flow, established and monitored the company’s strategic and financial objectives and represented the company in the national and international arena. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬♦ Significantly contributed to the company doubling turnover in my first year in the role ♦ Appointed as the study leader & project manager for a ground water exploration and well-field project, resulting in the discovery of one of the highest yielding boreholes in the Western Cape♦ Fostered the mainstreaming of GIS and Remote Sensing in all divisions and thematic projects of the company♦ Received a small business sector award at the Technology for Women in Business Awards and awarded overall runner up for the entire awards. I was promoted to this role when the company first established the GEO Informatics division.
