I have managed and taught classes for teachers absent between one day and one week, in both Bossier and Caddo parishes. I typically work with grades 4th and 5th, as well as 9th through 12th. While I prefer private tutoring, and have engaged in this for a number of years, the classroom is an interesting dynamic in which even the same class can vary from day to day. No matter how angelic or unruly the class, I always leave a hand-written or verbal report for the teacher, and try to name the most helpful, hard-working, and well-behaved students I see on a given day.

As a member of a local stagehand crew, my job is to help prepare a traveling show (normally music, occasionally an event like Cirque de Soleil) set up in the appropriate venue. Once trucks are offloaded, I typically assist in setting up lighting (often hanging dozens of lights) or audio, but may also work to set up the stage itself or some other component of a given show. After the event, we are prepared to take the same show down and get them on the road that night.

Shreveport, Louisiana Area

As an intern, I would either assist our Executive Director as an executive assistant or record-keeper, occasionally making phone calls or running errands. I also assisted the ShreveCorps members in tree-planting, garden-building, and similar activities. As an active Corps member myself, this expanded to teaching children in community centers about sustainable gardening, cooking, and the environment. The Corps participated in multiple community outreach programs, including Household Hazardous Waste disposal and Great American Cleanup. On several Saturdays, Shreveport Green even sent volunteers to one of my long-time non-profit families, Yogie and Friends Exotic Cat Sanctuary, to assist in grounds keeping efforts.

As a sales representative, my job was mainly on the sales floor. I would re-stock displaced merchandise, assist customers with project ideas or product locations, and generally help keep half of the store presentable. Occasionally I would provide extra help at the cash registers, or even take a full shift of check-out, phone answering, and register maintenance.

My volunteer work with Animal Welfare, Inc. centered around adopting out healthy, neutered cats. For several hours each Friday, I would go to the adoption center of the pet store chain hosting us and start by maintaining the cats' enclosures. While cleaning, and later playing with the cats and kittens suddenly allowed to roam the room, I would allow prospective adopters to come inside and look at potential adoptions. I would always try to leave these people as informed as possible, and encourage responsible adoption, while ensuring that the cats in my charge were being properly socialized and looked after.
