About Andre Dekker

Andre Dekker - Delft, 1956 – is a writing visual artist, founding partner of Observatorium.org in Rotterdam, working and publishing on public art, mainly in european countries. The works of art range from monumental architectural permanent pieces, art and landscape design for parks to temporary installations in collaboration, always in collaboration with owners and citizens. Andre is author and editor of the Observatorium publications Public Art for Public Life, Big Pieces of Time both publishes by nai010 – Rotterdam. Other publications Warten auf den Fluss, The Green Shadow, a publication of Urbane Künste Ruhr and De Dwarsligger van Aalst account of the context, concept, construction, programs and reception of functional public art.Since 1998 he is a guest lecturer at faculties of landscape architecture and art academies. He was awarded research and development grants from Mondriaan Foundation, Creative Industries NL and Rotterdam Centre for Visual Arts.Within Observatorium Andre is responsible for contextual research and concepts of works of art in relation to history, landscape and communities. He works regularly in multidisciplinary teams of artists, planners, architects and landscape designers in large scale urban transformations and is advisor to art and landscape foundations and organizations.In 2017 he edited and wrote Zollverein Park, a book about the landscape park of a large industrial world Unesco heritage site in Essen, which is published by Walter König Verlag, Köln. The park was awarded a mention by the European Prize for Public Space, Barcelona. Together with artist/publicist Hans Jungerius he edited Verborgen Landschap, published by Jap Sam Books.On invitation of Observatorium the late poet Barbara Köhler wrote a lyric essay titled 42 Ansichten zu Warten auf den Fluss, published by Edition Korrespondenzen, Vienna.May 2024 he will spend three weeks researching the urban wilderness of Sternwartepark in Vienna as part of his guest professorship on invitiation of Lilli Licka, head of the Institut für landschaftsarchitektur.Recently his landscape ink drawings were exhibited in art gallery Off Hook in Groningen. In june 2024 he will spend some weeks at a mountain retreat in the French Alps to draw the visible and invisble geology of UNESCO Geopark Chablais near Geneva.
