We researched blacklegged ticks and lone star ticks, their distribution patterns in association with ecological and wildlife factors such as deer. Some methods used were dragging for ticks, camera trapping, and small mammal trapping. The objective was to monitor the invasion of two novel species into Michigan, determine factors in this invasion, and monitor carry-rates of various diseases in the tick populations of Michigan.

During the ten weeks I spent at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, I worked with my Calvin University faculty Supervisor, Dr. Miller, and three other student researchers to surveil West Michigan for established tick populations, namely those of the black-legged tick. From the data collected, we will be able to track the increase in the range of the black-legged tick, monitor the prevalence of tick-borne disease in the tick populations, and the determine the presence of emerging diseases in Michigan.

During the ten weeks that I spent at Au Sable Institute, I worked with three other student researchers and our supervisor, Dr. Brian Keas, to monitor the recovery of the river following the removal of three dams over the last eight years. In order to do this, we took samples from the riverbed and identified the benthic macroinvertebrates collected and used various indexes to determine the health of the river's ecosystem. This was the final year of an eight-year study.
