The Fellowship program was established to honor the late John D. Solomon, an accomplished journalist on homeland security and a devoted public servant. It is sponsored by NYC Emergency Management and is the first student fellowship with the City devoted explicitly to emergency management. The program provides 10 graduate students in the New York City area with the opportunity to complete a nine-month fellowship in an agency of New York City government or a nonprofit organization.I was selected to be part of the second year of the fellowship and was partnered with the DYCD’s Continuity of Operations Director to write and compose the Continuity of Operations Guidebook for Community Based Organizations. The Guidebook served as a resource for 2,000+ CBOs to aid in developing a plan to deliver services to the community during natural disasters and emergencies preventing lack of access to resources and assistance, and promoting reliability on city funded services. As a fellow, I also participated in conversations and assisted my Director at City Hall: Vision Zero assemblies to discuss prevention and reduction strategies of vehicle-pedestrian accidents down to zero throughout NYC.

I was selected to join the Short-Term Training Program in Environmental and Occupational Health as a Community Outreach intern. This is a mentorship and training program funded since 1995 by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health for minority young professionals interested in the biomedical sciences, specifically in the areas of environmental and occupational health research has been and serves as. As a Community Outreach Intern, I communicated Environmental and Occupational Health research findings through visual aids and assisted with developing content for a distance-learning course designed for medical and public health professionals throughout Latin America. During my time, I designed and maintained a Wordpress website and developed Infographics for dissemination of Environmental Health risks, toxins and research findings in lay terms for non-professionals and developed evaluation tools to assess the course in content quality and student outcomes.

The Mothers and Babies: Mood and Health Research Program aims to develop research targeted at preventing the onset of perinatal depression and improving the mental health of families. Its intent is to focus on underserved populations, including low-income and ethnically diverse populations. The program originated in San Francisco and has an international network with Washington D.C. (George Washington University, and Palo Alto University), Spain (Universidad de Zaragoza and Universitat Jaume I), and Switzerland (University of St. Gallen). I recruited 40% of the cohort through the utilization of the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ – 9) to assess the risk for postpartum depression, prepared documents and guides with postpartum depression prevention strategies, and developed a coding system to translate qualitative data and transcripts to quantitative data and to assess for common themes, factors and variables found throughout various focus groups.
