About Andrea Grimoldi

I am an electronic engineer with an advanced experience in processing and characterization of thin films related to the development of electronic devices with new features. My interest in devices physics and fabrication fostered me to start a career in the organic electronics field which gave me the opportunity to explore innovative challenges with both open mind and thorough approach. I acquired an in-depth knowledge on electronics manufacturing techniques, thin films opto-electronic characterizations and semiconductor performance measurements. Design and analysis of unconventional sensors architectures were interesting topics I dealt with in order to wisely take advantage of organic semiconductors features.During my PhD, I found motivating addressing of a number of issues posed by inkjet printing of complex multi-layer structures such as proper ink formulation, device integration and process engineering in addition to fundamental transport and light-matter interaction studies. Throughout PostDoc at LiU and job at Energy Everywhere, I worked on energy storage (supercapacitors) and energy production (perovskite solar cells) devices with the same attitude. These experiences let me train on the ability to shift to different topics and to approach the study of devices and their optimization which were new to me.I am looking forward to multidisciplinary team work where hands-on and goal oriented approach can lead to tangible results. Understanding market demands and planning the work is necessary to produce innovative applications. My experience taught me that milestones are a key factor for a project development and tracking down carefully both successful achievements and failures is mandatory to push forward the research.

Fabrication and characterization of organic-based passive pixel developed by inkjet printing for large area imaging sensors.I exploited advantages provided by organic electronics in the field of large-area imaging with respect to inorganic-based electronics, thanks to the possibility of adopting solution-based, low thermal budget, scalable deposition techniques. To fabricate complex optoelectronic systems I integrated different devices onto the same substrate. This requires the adoption of a patterning deposition scheme. To this extent, I exploited drop-on-demand inkjet printing, an additive patterning technique which gives the possibility to deliver small quantities of functional materials formulated into inks on almost arbitrary substrates. I fabricated and characterized printed organic passive pixel integrating a photodiode and an addressing transistor. I addressed a number of issues posed by inkjet printing of such a complex multilayer structure such as proper ink formulation, device integration and process engineering in addition to fundamental transport and light-matter interaction studies. To solve this puzzle, a multidisciplinary approach at the boundary among physics, chemistry and engineering was mandatory and adopted. An in-depth knowledge was acquired on electronics manufacuring techniques, thin films charcterizations and semiconductor performance measurements. Design and analysis of unconventional circuital architectures was performed in order to wisely take advantage of organic devices. The ultimate product of this research is be a 3 by 3 array of pixels, developed and optimized to be employed as a prototypical X-ray imager (based on indirect photoconversion) suitable for biomedical applications.
