Did you know that the backward dog eating practice still exists in some countries?I grew up loving dogs. I fostered many dogs and puppies after my beloved German Shepherd died unexpectedly. The pain was so huge and I needed to be with dogs to reduce the pain.So when I learned about this cruel and inhumane dog meat trade from one of my business trips to China, I was heartbroken and disturbed. I was further horrified when I learned about the cruelty involved with this trade and that most of the dogs are stolen pets. I dropped everything planned for my retirement and started a non profit, Duo Duo Project in 2013. In the early stages of Duo Duo Project, I ran the first event by myself and now we have over 100 volunteers worldwide, 30,000 social media followers and a petition signed by over 5 million supporters. We have built boots on the ground teams throughout China: Beijing, Mudanjian, Guangzhou, Dandong, and Yulin. In 2014 we developed shelters and sponsored animal welfare summer camps in several cities where dog eating practice is rampant in China. In 2020, we were approved as a legal entity by the government of Mudanjiang, infamously known as the only city in China to have two sanctioned dog slaughterhouses. This legal status, which has been granted to a very few U.S. non-profits, means that Duo Duo Project can legally work directly with local NGOs dedicated to ending the cruel trade. After years of work in China with local activists, legislators, scholars and all walks of lives, Duo Duo Project has strategically developed a 3 prong approach to end the dog and cat meat trade: Education, Legislation and Spay & Neuter. While running a non-profit may seem to come naturally, prior to Duo Duo Project I was the CEO for an international trading company for 25 years. However, my early career as a Software Engineer is where I honed my problem solving skills. I believe it’s this combination of business acumen and analytical approach is why I’ve been successful launching Duo Duo Project.Perhaps I was a dog in my previous life, otherwise I cannot explain why I love them so much.We brought dogs into our lives to help us hunt and guard the house.
