I grew-up in a London suburb where the adults around me worked ‘up town’. This was during the 1980’s, dominated by yuppie high-flyers who worked hard and played harder. There was a real sense of infinite possibility for anyone willing to work hard enough for it. I loved that.My first ‘career conversation’ was with my Dad, I was 10. He told me that the only place women got into management was in Personnel. I didn’t know what that was, but ‘management’ meant working ‘up town’, so off I went in pursuit. Little did I know that that conversation would form the foundation of my career.I started off my Personnel career (or HR has it’s been renamed and reframed today) in the charity sector. It’s where I learnt the importance of purpose and belonging and how work should always be fun.Financial Services was the next calling at a fintech startup (although we didn’t call it that back then), and what a stark contrast to where I’d worked before. I grasped the importance and uniqueness of culture (before culture became ‘a thing’), and that I personally thrived in ambitious, pioneering environments. My next and last role was at a global talent solutions business; this is where I really started to progress my career. I broaden my scope beyond HR, into talent acquisition, employer brand, leadership, and L&D. It was an entrepreneurial place, briming with determination and I thrived. By my mid-thirties I was leading the global people agenda and the team responsible for delivering it. I quickly learnt to hire people better than me, and that the team around you is EVERYTHING.Today, I’m Head of People at RTGS.global, a fintech start-up that’s changing the world of payments. I consider myself truly fortunate as it’s a fusion of all the things I’ve come to love. How did I get here?1. I have grafted! Nobody made me do it, I just have a very strong work ethic. A product of my environment maybe, I’m a Generation X’er, but my mantra is ‘do your best’ and for me this means working exceptionally hard. I believe you get out what you put in. 2. I work with the best people. At RTGS.global, I am surrounded by the best in the industry, and together we’re striving to change the world. I know my limitations (there are many), so I surround myself with people that complement my skill set and together we’re achieving great things. 3. I have fun. This means doing something you enjoy. RTGS.global has provided me with a fantastic opportunity, and I genuinely love my job and the people I work with. If you’re not enjoying yours, get in touch!
