I work at the intersections of accountability, truth-telling, and systems change. As a seasoned civil rights litigator, I am focused on seeking justice for people harmed by our system of mass incarceration. I work to hold the government and corporate actors accountable when they allow abuse, neglect, or violence behind bars or at the hands of the police. I am also a firm believer that our society has collectively overrelied on reactionary interventions like jails and prisons to solve the myriad, complex, and urgent problems of community safety. I thus always aspire to connect my work to the broader struggle to build a range of interventions with more humanity, equity, and better results for community safety.I am a systems thinker with a long track record of using legal advocacy, organizing, and partnership to get results and meet the moment, including in 7 years at the headquarters of the national ACLU.I have over a decade of experience with litigation, and I have been involved at all levels of numerous pieces of complex federal litigation. I have served as lead or co-lead counsel in numerous class action lawsuits, challenging unconstitutional and discriminatory bail systems and practices across the country. My work is driven by my passion for ending systems that over-criminalize poor communities and communities of color. It is also driven by my sincere belief that when we work together, we can tackle hard problems and build a better world. As an Obama Leader, I am learning additional skills to organize and mobilize communities through value-driven leadership. When COVID-19 presented a grave threat to the lives of incarcerated people in our nation's crowded jails and prisons, I led the ACLU's charge to bring innovative lawsuits in an effort to save their lives. This required learning an entirely new body of law, coordinating several case teams for emergency filings, and personally arguing emergency requests in court.A safer, more humane, and more equitable world is possible.
