Semantic Arts specializes in building enterprise ontologies for large companies and finding semantic solutions for their data integration challenges. I worked on major projects in the finance, manufacturing and healthcare industries, along with several smaller projects. My role as a consulting ontologist was very multi-faceted and involved constant collaboration across teams and roles. To build the models, I rapidly assessed the client’s information assets, interfaced with business and technical teams to understand the client’s pain points, and interviewed SMEs to ensure coverage of the domain. To guide implementation and adoption of the model, I worked with developers on ETL (provide scripting instructions or R2RML maps) and wrote the SPARQL queries for use in client APIs/UIs. My role also involved maintaining an open source upper ontology for enterprises (gist) and co-teaching a 4-day course on designing business ontologies.

One of Onvia’s offerings is a government bid aggregation site that allows contractors to search for RFPs in one place. During this 7-month contract I assisted in the construction of Onvia’s taxonomy using the SmartLogic Semaphore Ontology Manager. Using this software I built out hierarchies of preferred terms within the various domains of government contracts to enable auto-categorization of documents and to optimize client search capabilities. Additionally, I built out non-preferred term lists to control for synonyms and false hits and implemented phrase preclusions where necessary. For quality assurance I ran tests on tagging performance, performed research and made modifications to optimize results. (As a result of this position, you might want me on your trivia team for categories such as: janitorial supplies, sewer cleaning machinery, railway supplies, and asphalt laying techniques.)

Career Services Manager (CSM) implementation and management for the Information SchoolIn this position, my overarching role was to assist the iAffiliates Director and other stakeholders (including Student Services, Advancement, and the Dean’s Office) in developing the iAffiliates program. My predecessor had assessed and selected a vendor software product (Symplicity), and I then implemented and configured this new iSchool contact management system “out of the box”. To do so I gathered and imported/entered existing data sets into the system and worked with the UW Advance system and iSchool Advancement to develop reports and import mechanisms for iSchool contact management system data. Once configured, I documented the system functionality and provided training and instruction to students and staff. Finally, I provided logistical support for iAffiliates events throughout the school year.

Part-time Special Events Campaign Coordinator, Oct 2011 – Apr 2012Campaign Coordinator, Big Climb Event Lead, May 2010 – Sep 2011Campaign Coordinator, Big Climb Event Co-Lead, Aug 2009 – Apr 2010While holding these various Event Coordinator positions over 3+ years at LLS I performed a wide range of duties. In the true non-profit sense, there was no task exempt from my job description, however inglorious. A highlight of my time at LLS was acting as the staff lead on the 2011 Big Climb fundraising campaign. The Big Climb is the largest annual event for the WA/AK Chapter of LLS, both in number of participants and fundraising expectations. I was responsible for all aspects of the event – marketing and promotion, event budget, partnerships with sponsors, fundraising incentive programs, day-of-event logistics, staff placements and vendor relationships. But most importantly, I provided customer service and fundraising support to 6,000 event participants and their donors throughout the event season and we were able to raise $1,600,000 for blood cancer research. Some of my other duties included recruiting and coordinating volunteers for five of other large fundraising events, configuring our Convio fundraising campaign databases for applicable events, and training other staff on how to use the Convio software.

As an AmeriCorps volunteer with The Gleaners Coalition, I supervised and coordinated activities for volunteers and student interns at local farms. Along with this I co-coordinated the TASTE nutrition education program at the Thurston County Food Bank. Between farm and foodbank activities I maintained all of the non-profit’s databases and prepared outreach publications. The position also gave me the opportunity to participate in weekly professional development activities or community service as part of a 20 member AmeriCorps team.
