Working in partnership with AIRstudio and the University of British Columbia, this research aims to explore equitable approaches to housing design through developing arts-based methods for engaging communities in the housing design process. The collaboration investigates how comics may offer architecture a way to explore lived experiences in new ways and to share knowledge with wider audiences. In our current phase of research, we are creating a comic book exploring our findings and outlining opportunities for community-based design strategies. Offering a curation of international case studies in intentional, community-oriented, multi-generational, and climate-resilient homes, through the format of a graphic novel, this work expands not only the discussion of purpose-built housing within the design community but offers a reach to audiences that may otherwise not have access.

My SSHRC-funded doctoral research in Language and Literacy Education employs comics-based research methods to explore the craft of graphic storytelling as a primary way of understanding and examining young people’s speculations about the future. Enriched through interdisciplinary scholarship reaching across the fields of visual literacy, education, media, and the fine arts my work integrates theories of youth empowerment and speculative design within the creation of graphic narratives set in the present/future.

My comics and nonfiction writing have appeared in Broken Pencil, The Tyee, Room Magazine, and Display Canadian Design as well as in exhibitions in Canada, Australia, Germany, and Iceland. As a filmmaker and animator, my works have been screened at the Berlinale Talent Campus, FIFA World Cup. Winnipeg Short Film Festival, NYU Film Festival, Quickdraw Animation, Mount Pleasant Community Screens, and the international collaboration One Day on Earth. I am currently working on a graphic novel exploring the intersections of neurodiversity, academia, and motherhood and collaborating on an interactive media project centred on radical ocean ecologies and cold-water swimming. As a Shadbolt Fellow in the Humanities, hosted in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, I am creating a series of linked animations titled, Drawing Beyond Inclusion. Working collaboratively with the disability + neurodivergent community of students, staff, and faculty at SFU, the project asks: What stories of ours are not seen? How are we not visible? And how can our stories offer us a voice within academia, a space to share our experiences with the university and the world?Drawing Beyond Inclusion looks to extend memoir, and the constructions of ethnography, especially autoethnography, merging them into a simultaneously individual and collective art-making practice. In exploring new possibilities within disability + neurodivergent narratives, this project responds to the lived experiences of self-identified students, staff, and scholars from the SFU community. Upon completion, the animations will be screened at SFU Harbour Centre in August 2023.

Rhetoric in New Media engages the diverse nature of the Digital Landscape. It focuses on themes and tensions in participatory culture, transmedia, and interactive storytelling. Through discussion, writing, and presentation students explore the social and cultural implications of digital media and the academic potential it holds across disciplines.

Course Overview"Through an immersive mix of discussion, lecture, and writing, Introduction to Writing for New Media equips students with the knowledge and practical tools to engage critically with the new media landscape, its related social impacts and tensions, and the artistic potential it holds for writers. Students will learn how to write clearly and functionally for diverse publics online. They will explore how the new media landscape facilitates evolving opportunities for artistic collaboration, community engagement, and building community capacity. PRISM international, the oldest literary magazine in western Canada, is a quarterly magazine whose mandate is to publish the best in contemporary writing and translation from Canada and around the world. Writing from PRISM has been featured in Best American Stories, Best American Essays and The Journey Prize Stories, amongst other noted publications.

PRISM has a total of three contests: the Creative Non-Fiction, Short Fiction, and Poetry contests, open to all. In addition, the Earle Birney Prize for Poetry is presented to one outstanding poet published in the magazine.PRISM international publishes award-winning literature by award-winning authors. Some of the pieces featured in PRISM have been nominated for the Western Magazine Awards and the National Magazine Awards, while other pieces have been included in the Journey Prize Stories, Best American Essays and Best American Stories anthologies. Previous contributors have gone on to receive such honours as the Alberta Literary Award and the Writer’s Trust of Canada / McClelland & Steward Journey Prize.

Co-created by the University of British Columbia’s Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program (MFA CRWR) and the Vancouver School Board (VSB), New Shoots places current MFA students in secondary school classes to teach the craft of creative writing. At the end of the school year, New Shoots publishes an anthology of student work from secondary schools across the Vancouver School Board.
