Hi, I’m Andrea and I'm CFO at Oncocyte, a molecular diagnostics technology company.I've run strategy, investor relations and capital stewardship. For six years, I helped lead Axon via a series of escalating finance roles as a key exec on the team that transformed the company from $1 billion to $20 billion in market cap. I inject energy and heterodox strategic thinking into organizations. My superpower is combining analytical training, narrative storytelling and writing, and authenticity with a deep understanding of corporate capital structure and financial modeling. Translation: I love both people and spreadsheets. The capital markets energize me.I've worked on strategic investor relations for Tesla and as a VP and senior research analyst for Dougherty & Co., where I researched disruptive tech on behalf of institutional investors. My career portfolio includes advisory work with awesome companies & founders; Solve for X LLC, with clientele including portfolio managers, Fortune 50 executives, a former member of Congress, and tech engineers; and property management with short term & long term rentals. As a classically trained financial analyst, I've gone deep on aerospace and defense, clean tech/automotive, and industrial markets, including defense and intelligence contracting, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), commercial satellite imagery and remote sensing (geoint), precision ag, 3D printing, firearms, and electric vehicles and batteries. And of course, SaaS, hard tech, gov tech and so on thanks to Axon.Media & public speaking are fun! I've appeared on CNBC, Bloomberg News, CNN, and Fox Business. I've appeared in media outlets including Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and the MIT Technology Review. Prior to all of the above, I was an investigative business reporter, and was profiled by CBS MarketWatch and National Public Radio. In undergrad, I majored in computer science, and minored in physics and communications. I hold a masters degree in journalism from Northwestern. I'm at my best in a crisis. I love to laugh. I have more than 14,000 followers on X (aka Twitter), which I share because I’m not sure it’s relevant or not, but just in case it is. My husband and I love to ski and mountain bike, and we have three children.

Responsibilities include managing a paid staff that includes weekly child care, janitorial (housekeeping) staff, tax accountant, a handy-repair-person and the lawn guy. As co-founders of Family, Inc., we are responsible for all of the unpaid duties, roles and responsibilities of running a household with children, in addition to full-time paid work. My paid employment, as shown in my LinkedIn experiences, requires frequent air travel and has coincided with four pregnancies (including one miscarriage), three child births & physical recovery (which takes years), and breastfeeding all three children. Developed expert people management skills. Have become a 10x’er in time management. Gained logistical operations expertise in managing a full-time work and travel schedule while also lactating and being responsible for 100% of my infants’ food needs in their first six months of life. (Doing the same dance moves as my peers, backwards and in high heels.) No regrets.

Chief Communications Officer & Investor Relations HeadAxon Sep 2022 - Dec 2023Scottsdale, Az, UsFor the six years I worked for Axon, I was building, building, building -- functions, teams and processes, relentlessly. When I exited in December 2023, CEO and Founder Rick Smith said, "we’ve grown 15x since AJ joined, and earlier this year, Axon entered the S&P 500. She was one of a small inside group of change agents who helped make that transformation possible."I joined Axon in 2017 as part of its finance turn-around. Its Wall Street perception badly needed repair: It was one of the most heavily shorted (that is, bet against) stocks on the NASDAQ, and its SaaS-driven business model was misunderstood. The company had just renamed itself to Axon from TASER, its valuation did not reflect its potential, and some investors called the company, "uninvestable." (About 35% of float was sold short.)I drove Axon in refreshing its quarterly updates to build credibility and provide more transparency. I also focused daily on building relationships, hosting tours, clarifying misperceptions, and establishing an investment community feedback loop to Axon executives and board. This work was foundational to equity raises in 2018 and 2020 that raised ~$550 million, and welcomed growth and GARP investors to join Axon on its growth journey. In 2019, I leaned in to build Axon’s strategy function, a center of excellence focused on M&A, strategic investments and partnerships. The team’s job is to ensure that Axon is investing to expand its ecosystem leadership, as well as advising the CFO and board on capital structure and the optimal way to leverage the balance sheet in support of product strategy. I nicknamed the team, “the capital stewards,” to reflect its imperative to steward the resources that have been entrusted to Axon by its customers and shareholders.Axon’s investor relations function became known as best-in-class, having won many awards from Investor Relations magazine and Institutional Investor, which are the people’s choice awards of Wall Street. -

Investor RelationsTesla Sep 2016 - Jun 2017Austin, Texas, UsIn 2016, Elon Musk asked me to join Tesla to help with its investor relations efforts. I worked on strategic investor communications, quarterly messaging, and shareholder communication. I was the lead planner for Tesla's January 2017 Gigafactory investor event. -
Vice President, Senior Research AnalystDougherty & Company Aug 2009 - May 2016Minneapolis, Mn, UsResearching emerging technologies for the equity capital markets group, which focuses on discovering investment ideas using proprietary information. This is a fancy way of saying that I was a stock research analyst. My focus was on game-changing technology in disruptive markets -- including aerospace & defense, and industrials.I built a body of published research and client connections that brings in seven-figures' worth of annual revenue for our firm. It was a privilege to add value to the marketplace and to assist buy-side clients in their decision making. The job was a great fit for me because it combined two different sets of skills, and was thus rewarding. I combined hard skills, including financial data modeling and explanatory writing, with soft skills, such as helping clients to understand complex issues and building a network of industry contacts who helped me to go deep on the specific companies I researched.I developed expertise in defense and intelligence contracting, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), commercial satellite imagery, precision agriculture technology, 3D printing, firearms, and electric vehicles & batteries. My favorite part of the job was that it connected me to businesses and hard-working people who are out there everyday innovating, building, growing and making America run. -
Aerospace ReporterSeattlepi Mar 2009 - Aug 2009Seattle, Wa, UsIn mid-March, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer became the first major newspaper to transition from a printed product to an online-only format. The paper retained 10 percent of its staff, including me. At first, I covered the Seattle economy, which includes Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks news, as well as general economic and labor issues. Starting June 1, I narrowed my beat to aerospace after helping to persuade the president of Hearst Newspapers that such a move was a good idea. The PI's aerospace blog received nearly 1 million page views in its first month of having me as its full-time writer, breaking company records. -
Business ReporterSeattle Post-Intelligencer Sep 2006 - Mar 2009Retail, labor and economics reporter: Cover breaking news and companies including Amazon.com, Starbucks, Nordstrom and Costco. Started an “online retail” news blog for seattlepi.com, which I’ve grown to 60,000 views per month. Broke the P-I's record for article with the most Web hits in one day. Appeared on Fox Business News, a national cable station.Enterprise business reporter: Most notable was my six-month investigation into Boeing’s struggles complying with Sarbanes-Oxley, the corporate reform law that became onerous for many public firms, and my exclusive story on Boeing’s practice of spying on its employees.Breaking news as needed: Most notable was my coverage of the deadly collapse of a tower crane in nearby Bellevue in 2006. Under the guidance of staff mentors, I developed sources in the state investigation unit and broke the news of the investigators’ findings months before their reports were released. One state legislator credited my coverage for spurring the passage of a stricter state crane safety law.

Regional Sales AdministratorRadio Shack Jun 2000 - Aug 2000Fort Worth, Tx, UsBy the time a complaint reached the Radio Shack regional office, the customer was pretty irate. It meant that the store manager hadn't been able to satisfy the customer, and that the problem did not get solved at the district level. My job was to help solve it, because the next stop was headquarters in Texas. And we didn't want that!Beyond problem-solving customer complaints and product issues, I compiled daily sales reports per product SKU for the 200 stores in our region, assisted the district managers and performed other administrative tasks. The "regional sales administrator" job was normally held by Olga Wexler, a wise woman who taught me as much about love and life as she did retail electronics and Microsoft Excel. Because she had surgery that summer, I took over her job for a few months as she recovered. This was my first paying job. -
President'S Interagency Council On WomenU.S. Department Of State Jan 2000 - May 2000Washington, Dc, UsI worked in a specific division that focused on women's rights.I helped coordinate Madeleine Albright's "Global Roundtable on Women," held in spring 2001. This meant logistics planning, welcoming women's rights leaders to Washington in an official State Department black sedan, assisting guests on a private White House tour, attending parties at hotels where my official job was to mingle and help guests feel welcome, making copies - lots of copies! - of agendas and welcome packets, and making phone calls - lots of phone calls! - to invite VIPs to gatherings with Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton. One woman I welcomed to the US included Lubna Al-Kazi, a woman's suffrage leader in Kuwait.Other tasks while I was at State included building and populating a database to help the women's rights leaders keep in touch with each other and compiling country profiles of women's rights abuses, most notably FGM and suffrage.Lots of hard work, late hours, some menial tasks and no pay in return for meeting an inspiring host of women and men, from the First Lady and State Secretary, to ambassadors and women's rights leaders. It was a proper DC dues-paying internship.
