The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine offers research projects to students each summer. The projects included testing Greyhound footpad tissue for papillomavirus to determine if the virus was a causative agent in corn lesions as well as testing feline urine for paramyxovirus in cats with chronic kidney disease. This position required learning new techniques in a laboratory, teamwork between students and clinicians, problem solving, and presenting the project to peers and staff.

Main duties included assisting in clinical trials on both small animals and horses and assisting the veterinarians with routine procedures.

Worked with a private veterinarian at local horse shows to drug test horses via collecting samples for drug testing.

The laboratory receives samples (blood, hair, tissue, semen, and occasionally meat, bone, or other hide/whole tissue) from dairy and beef cattle which can be individually tested for various genetic defects, parentage, or production qualities. Duties included sample preparation, DNA extraction, data entry, archiving, sample processing (Sequenom platform), contributing to and adapting to new procedures, training and assisting new personnel, and following lab organization/inventory/cleaning protocol. This position required working independently with strong attention to detail and accuracy and as a member of a dynamic and diverse team.
