National University Of Singapore May 2021 - Present
    Singapore, Sg
Oon Chiew Seng Professor in Medicine and Functional AgeingSingapore's population is rapidly ageing - people are living longer, while the birth rate remains low. By 2030, one in four Singaporeans will be 65 years and above, twice the current ratio. In addition, direct costs of elderly healthcare in Singapore are projected to rise tenfold to more than $66 billion. Given the increased prevalence of age-related disease that accompanies the ageing population, this issue may represent the biggest medical challenge of the 21st century. Ageing is the most common and biggest risk factor for most chronic diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, frailty, most forms of cancer and diabetes. The Centre for Healthy Longevity is a multi-disciplinary hub that integrates research and clinical care, providing a holistic strategy to promote healthy living throughout the ageing process, from effective disease prevention in the healthy to novel and compassionate end-of-life care.

    President-Elect Anzssfr
Australian And New Zealand Society For Sarcopenia And Frailty Research (Anzssfr) Mar 2019 - Nov 2020
    St. Albans, Victoria, Au
ANZSSFR is a professional, scientific society dedicated to the promotion of clinical, basic and translational research on sarcopenia and frailty in Australia and New Zealand. We aim to disseminate current knowledge of sarcopenia and frailty, along with deepening the understanding of muscle, bone and joint disease. Our research on sarcopenia, osteoporosis and their combination, often culminating in disability and frailty, aims to identify, prevent and treat these conditions with the goal to translate evidence-based research and knowledge into clinical and real-world practice to better support older people in ageing well. We believe that understanding the links between sarcopenia, frailty and osteoporosis assists in designing research and improving interventions in clinical practice that may help older people to reduce their risk of disease and live independently and without disability into old age.ANZSSFR also acts to represent the needs of its members through annual scientific meetings, as well as the wider clinical and lay community through advocacy and interaction with government, key stakeholders and related societies.

  • Ageing Research Reviews
    Editorial Board Member
Ageing Research Reviews Mar 2021 - Present
As the average human life expectancy has increased, so too has the impact of ageing and age-related disease on our society. Ageing research is now the focus of thousands of laboratories that include leaders in the areas of genetics, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and behaviour. Ageing Research Reviews (ARR) covers the trends in this field. It is designed to fill a large void, namely, a source for critical reviews and viewpoints on emerging findings on mechanisms of ageing and age-related disease. Rapid advances in understanding of mechanisms that control cellular proliferation, differentiation and survival are leading to new insight into the regulation of ageing. From telomerase to stem cells to energy and oxyradical metabolism, this is an exciting new era in the multidisciplinary field of ageing research. The cellular and molecular underpinnings of manipulations that extend lifespan, such as caloric restriction, are being identified and novel approaches for preventing age-related diseases are being developed. ARR publishes articles on focussed topics selected from the broad field of ageing research, with an emphasis on cellular and molecular mechanisms of the aging process and age-related diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders. Applications of basic ageing research to lifespan extension and disease prevention are also covered in this journal.https://www.journals.elsevier.com/ageing-research-reviews

    Steering Committee Member
International Cell Senescence Association Jul 2018 - Present
The association aims to promote research, co-operation and exchange of information among all those interested in any aspect of cellular senescence. Cellular senescence is a programmed state of stable cell cycle arrest that is accompanied by a complex phenotype. Senescent cells play a role in physiological processes such as tumour suppression, wound healing and embryonic development, whilst paradoxically they can contribute to ageing, cancer and age-related disease. As such, the field of cellular senescence represents a multidisiplinary research topic.

Spread throughout the campus they provide an unsurpassed interdisciplinary knowledge-base on ageing, which is of crucial importance in an ageing society. The research on ageing that is conducted at VU University and VU University Medical Center is broad, ranging from fundamental science on biology of ageing and applied research into health and care innovation to ethics, economy, juridical science and research on social networks of older people and healthy lifestyles. The Amsterdam Center on Aging (ACA) is the platform in which the researchers all get together, discuss research plans and opportunities, exchange research findings and communicate about their work with one another, the general public and other stakeholders from policy to health and social care organizations. Principal Investigator
    Myoage, European Fp7 Program (Health-2007-2.4.5-10) ‘Understanding And Combating Age-Related Muscle 2009 - Sep 2013
Ageing of skeletal muscle results in a progressive loss of mobility that decreases the quality of life and has major economic and social consequences for society at large. Increasing muscle weakness is a major component of muscle ageing. In the elderly muscles become atrophic (loss in muscle mass) and weaker (loss in muscle force), more susceptible to damage and consequently regenerate and recover more slowly than was the case in their youth.
