My business card says I am a chartered accountant/auditor. It sounds a little boring, right? But I'm much more than that – I love singing, dancing and playing the piano/guitar and also the occasional online game.If there is one word to describe an auditor it would be perseverance. Perseverance is an overused buzzword, right? Yes, but to me, it is the key to success. This is true for many people who started life with very little and had to struggle through endless days of worries, tears, hardships and failures and eventually succeed despite the odds.Recently, I was moved by the story of Chinese billionaire Zhou Qunfei, the world's richest self-made woman. She attributed her success to one thing: perseverance. Her father, a skilled craftsman, went blind and lost a finger in a factory accident before she was born, and her mother died when she was 5. "I had to constantly think about where my next meal is and how I am going to get it," she says.I am also inspired by the story of an underprivileged student of the Institute of Technical Education in Singapore. Here is an excerpt of the article.‘She did not have money to take the bus to school nor could her family afford necessities such as a school bag. The young woman shared, “So, I put my pencils and books in a plastic bag and walked to and from school every day. I walked fast, so I could reach in 30 to 40 minutes. My classmates made fun of me for bringing a plastic bag to school, but I didn’t care. I wanted to study.” Perhaps many resumes treat perseverance as just a buzzword but to these two women perseverance helped them to succeed. Indeed perseverance and humility are quiet powers that have helped me to do well in my life.
