In this role, I led the roll out of Lean operating principles through Boral's largest division: Boral Construction Materials. This division comprised 25 Quarry, Concrete, Asphalt and Logistics business units covering over 400 operating sites and generating nearly $3b in annual revenue. My team worked with operational staff and management from these business units to address waste and inefficiency and establish lean processes, both in operations and the back office. This was a major cultural change program, requiring all employees to become problem seekers and problem solvers.

I was the head of strategic planning for Boral's largest division, the Construction Materials division. In this role, I advised and supported the Divisional Managing Director, developed 5 year strategic plans, analysed strategic issues, allocated capital, identified and modelled potential acquisitions and ran a number of specific projects.During this period, the division strengthened its position in growth markets, reduced its asset base and cost position in shrinking markets and improved pricing management. It began bitumen importation, expanded its fleet of mobile plants for major engineering construction projects and executed a number of small acquisitions. The division successfully navigated through the Global Financial Crisis, repositioning its hydrocarbon hedge book ahead of the crash in oil prices and increasing the focus on cash generation and cost management. The division significantly grew production, revenue and profits over this period.I was also responsible for the Environmental function and managed the development of an Environmental Management System, developed measurement systems to support sustainability reporting and compliance reporting for EEO and NGERS, and developed the annual Environmental Strategic Plan that was presented to the board.

I assisted Partners in Performance in the early stages of their engagement with Pasminco (then in receivership and later re-launched as Zinifex) in the months leading up to the birth of my first child. I worked with employees at the Cockle bay smelter in Newcastle to identify and resolve issues in the sinter plant. We implemented a number of simple solutions to major drivers of downtime and operational instability, which enabled this previous bottleneck to increase throughput and cope with a greater variety of input materials.

This was a very early startup internet retailing venture owned by Murdoch Magazines and Dahlsens Building Supplies. Working for the MD, I managed a combined internal and external team to develop our transactional website, build and manage our product catalogues, operate our warehouse and distribution, and establish marketing and customer service.

I was part of an internal team working with McKinsey consultants to improve operational performance and reduce costs at the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter. In this position, I worked with local teams to understand their cost drivers and performance issues, ran structured workshops to generate potential solutions, analysed and prioritised improvement ideas and developed implementation plans. In the area I supported, we generated improvements with a total impact of $47m that were implemented within 12 - 24 months.

As part of the Mine Planning team, my role was to optimise mining methods and undertake specific projects. I compiled the annual short term operations plan, looked at upgrading options for sub-grade resources and did a major review of blending practices, recommending significant changes which were implemented the following year and enabled increased production yield without increased staff or capital.
