About Andrea Pineda-Salgado
I'm a bilingual journalist born and raised in Queens, New York—one of the most diverse places in the world. Growing up surrounded by people with vastly different lives, sparked my curiosity about the world around me. Each person I encountered had a unique story, and that curiosity naturally led me to pursue a career in journalism. My work focuses on uplifting the voices of those who are often marginalized. I’ve written stories that humanize the issues affecting New York City and beyond. I’ve written about the perils migrants face when leaving the New York City shelter system, a formerly incarcerated individual's search for housing, undocumented street vendors’ fight to legalize their businesses, and immigrant families rebuilding their lives after a devastating fire destroyed their rent-stabilized building. With an empathetic approach to my reporting, my goal is to be a megaphone for marginalized communities, allowing them to share their stories with a broader audience. As a native Spanish speaker, much of my work has centered around the Spanish-speaking communities of New York City. While I enjoy all forms of storytelling, my true passion lies in video journalism. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is priceless. My aim is to take these important stories and leverage the power of video to bring them to life for even larger audiences.I am a recent graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where I refined my skills and honed my video storytelling techniques. Before that, I worked as Epicenter-NYC’s very first reporter, where I gained invaluable on-the-ground experience. Prior to that, I completed my undergraduate studies at New York University, where I learned the foundations of journalism. I have bylines in Latin Times, Documented, and have interned at CBS News.
