Staff Scientist (Research Faculty)
I use state-of-the-art coding methods in Python (including machine learning and AI) to analyze, model, and visualize large datasets at catalog (millions of entries) and imaging (many GBs) level. With predictive modeling and comparisons to computer simulations, I study these datasets to learn about the physics of the Universe. I lead large (international) science collaboration to obtain new data from various telescopes and serve as interface between scientists and software developers to realize the next generation of telescopes and analysis tools.Main job highlights:• Principal lead designer of major parts of the software calibration and analysis pipeline for a NASA space telescope (launch 2025). Based on 100s of GB/day. As a scientific lead, I interface with software developers to realize prototype code meeting scientific requirements.• Co-lead of the Joint Survey Processing (JSP) project, which will analyze 100s of TB of data from the next generation international flagship telescopes (Rubin, Roman, and Euclid). I am the primary architectural lead of the software and computing tools.• Co-leading scientist of the IPAC Science Platform initiative to create community tools for the analysis and manipulation of large astronomical data sets.• Principal lead of a large international science collaboration (>50 people) using the ALMA telescope to study various aspects of galaxy formation and evolution at the scientific forefront. Co-lead of several other collaborations.• Co-lead 67+ scientific articles (4200+ citations) in renowned astrophysical journals. First author of more than 15 publications.• Supervised 4 undergraduate students, 2 graduate students, and 2 post-doctoral scholars. Part of the FIELDS program for the inclusion of underrepresented minorities in STEM fields.• 15+ invited talks at renowned international conferences and workshops.• Part of several committees for hiring students and faculty, and grant reviews up to $3M.
