The ITB is the largest institute of its kind in Italy and was established to pioneer new types of cross-disciplinary biomedical research by bringing biology, engineering, medicine, and the basic sciences together. This is achieved by means of collaborations between industry and basic scientists and clinicians from a broad range of disciplines. One of the most important aims of its research mission is translating fundamental discoveries into new technologies.

The primary objective is to develop a coordinated action plan for scientific community, to help deal with the flood of Next Generation Sequencing (NSG) data in an efficient and coherent manner using state-of- the-art bioinformatics.

All the partners in AllBio have a strong motivation to work on generic bioinformatics theory, technology, and application. They will now coordinate the generalisation and the broadening of the applicability of the many human-centric bioinformatics facilities that were originally designed for the purpose of analysing the human genome sequence and the subsequently collected post (human) genomic datasets. These activities require that the partners start to structure and coordinate their collaborations with national researchers in life sciences such as biotechnology, cell biology, functional and comparative genomics, or biochemistry, and carry these collaborations to an international level. EMBnet’s mission is to provide education and training in bioinformatics, to exploit network infrastructures to investigate, develop and deploy public domain software, to assist biotechnology- and bioinformatics-related research, bridging between commercial and academic sectors, promoting global cooperation through its community networks.

The objective of the five-year EMBRACE project has been to draw together a wide group of experts throughout Europe who are involved in the use of information technology in the biomolecular sciences. To achieve this the EMBRACE Network of Excellence has been optimising informatics and information exploitation by pure and applied biological scientists in both the academic and commercial sectors.
