"It depends".That is the logical (and well-established) intuitive answer to any architectural/design question in the context of enterprise IT-architecture.Not because you try to mimic politicians and duck the question, but because there are actually so many different aspects (most of them not even technical) to consider in order to be able to give a substantial answer. Many aspects to consider means there is a profound challenge in how to utilize software engineering in the best way to add true value to an enterprise. Luckily I really enjoy a challenge. Just as much as I enjoy adding true value!I have over 22 years of experience architecting and creating IT-solutions for enterprises in diverse sectors such as banking, insurance and real estate. Starting out as a software engineer - designing, building, testing and implementing applications and integrations on the Java platform - I have over the years constantly tried to passionately keep up with the evolvement of information technology and continuously develop my skill sets accordingly. I love to embrace reasonably new but still proven technologies, agile methodologies and DevOps services, and as an IT-Architect at the enterprise level I often have had the privilege to use some of those tools to create new opportunities for growth, innovation and productivity. Today, I might be a little bit more comfortable (regarding implementation details) utilizing the .NET platform rather than the Java platform, but my main interest and deep knowledge about IT-architecture is not tied to a specific technical platform. Why? Cause my knowledge is about assessing whether you even should implement such things as Microservices, Event-driven Architecture, Clean Architecture, Event Streaming and Domain-driven design. If it benefits your enterprise, when and how should it be implemented? How should you address issues regarding privacy and data security? Should you migrate to the cloud, containerize applications/services, streamline the application portfolio or pursue a digital transformation? How should it be done? When? All in all, for me it is about trying to give a more substantial answer than “it depends”.
