At this internship, the MMU department of Engineering in collaboration with the Wythenshawe hospital, gave me the opportunity to develop my research completed during the course of my dissertation. Following my work of CFD simulation and analysis through 2D human airway models, with and without a tracheotomy tube, I developed 3D models through the usage of patient specific CT scans. This was done to understand the fundamental differences between 2D and 3D models, as well as to acquire important insight on the flow inside a tracheotomy tube, mouth and nose of an ICU patient. This was seen from velocity and pressure values recorded at different chosen locations around the airway. This internship helped me further develop my skills in engineering analysis and design, with the ability to apply engineering principles with CFD analysis at its core. This experience also has given me the confidence in using CAD software to translate CT scan images into fully working CAD models, with the ability to fix and repair any errors and allow for fluid simulations to be carried out for each model. With this work I was able to enhance my understanding of my dissertation topic, as well as further work on the skills required for future work in this field.
