I started with the ICRC in 1985 and visited prisons and places of internment in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (1985 to 1987), in Iraq (1989 to 1991), in Yemen (1993) and in other countries in the Middle East and North Africa. I also worked for the protection of civilians in times of conflicts in Afghanistan (1987 to 1989) and in the Balkans (1998 - 2002). As Deputy to the Director General, I was involved in institutional strategy work and in my capacity as the Deputy to the Director of Operations, I was in charge of explaining the principled humanitarian approach, based on neutrality, independence and humanity, to the main stakeholders in the Islamic world. The aim was to be accepted as a trustful and effective humanitarian organisation that cares for the needs of the most vulnerable people and works for the compliance by the State and non State belligerants with the International Humanitarian Law.Specialties: Questions linked to Protection of victims of war and other situations of violence.
