The Board of Directors is the governing body of American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (American Friends of AvH). The Board determines and advances the organization’s mission, and is responsible for strategic direction, oversight, and evaluation of the organization. Currently: Chair of DEI and Investment Committees, Member of Executive, Program, and Advancement Committees.

Selection Committee Chair since September 2023.The German Chancellor Fellowship Programme for prospective leaders brings professionals to Germany for one year to implement a self-designed project. Fellows network with international future leaders to help find new answers to the global issues of our time. Fellows are from the U.S., China, Brazil, and South Africa.The Humboldt Foundation sponsors scientists and scholars, irrespective of academic discipline and nationality. They strengthen Germany as a research location through international research exchange. They support fellowship and award recipients during their entire lifetimes and actively promote international understanding, scientific progress and development.

With a focus on large centers and junior faculty, I focus on the strategic pursuit of new research directions and grant opportunities to fund them.

I work to advance UCSB STEM faculty research by facilitating access to extramural funding – contracts, grants, and awards. In this role, I provide faculty with funding source information, review proposals, and organize writing workshops and mock panel reviews. Other activities include developing strategic campus initiatives, managing limited submission competitions, and promoting collaborative and interdisciplinary research efforts.

I am a member of the Leadership Denver Class of 2015.

Consulting on Graduate Education, Postdoctoral Training, and Science and Technology Policies in the U.S., Germany, and China. Issues of specialization include world class universities, workforce mobility, under represented minorities, biomedical researchers, funding program programs and research competitiveness.

Research on higher education and research policy with a focus on graduate and postdoctoral research and training in the natural sciences.

I will be at Humboldt University in Berlin for one year doing a comparative study of how Germany and the U.S. fund science education and research training programs.

I examined postdoctoral training issues (e.g. Habilitation, funding programs, career concerns) and research training and funding policies (e.g. Excellence Initiative and broader EU policies).

Managed fellowship programs for graduate students in the biomedical sciences. This included the application, review, and award processes; being in charge of annual meetings; overseeing budgets; and approving annual and financial reports from grantees.

For the local chapter I held leadership positions, including chapter president. For the national organization I held the councilor position and was editor of the "Washington Wire".

Responsibilities included staffing the standing Training and Early Careers committee, responsibility for National Science Foundation related advocacy, editing the Annual Federal Funding Recommendations report, liaising with the FASEB MARC Advisory Boad.

I worked in the Office of Legislative and Public Affairs and did Congressional affairs, speechwriting, and public affairs. In this capacity, I wrote speeches for the Directory and Deputy Director of NSF, drafted Congressional testimony, briefed Congressional staff, and drafted press releases.

I ran a fellowship programs for postdoctoral biomedical researchers and for medical students to take a year off from medical school to do research. I was also involved in developing material for and writing "Making the Right Moves: A Guide to Laboratory Management" co published by HHMI and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

I was in the biophysics program and worked a physical chemistry laboratory. I worked with high field NMR (mostly 11.7T spectroscopy and 4.7T small bore imaging/spectroscopy).
