Profile bio

About André Felipe Batista, Phd

I am a research scientist with extensive experience and am interested in the translation of science into healthcare innovation. Approximately, fifteen years working with Alzheimer’s Disease in partnership with very respectful organizations in Brazil, Canada, and United States. I am a professional with deep expertise in neuroscience and currently researching the mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease with the goal of identifying novel drug targets. I'm also developed new mouse models related to the neuroimmunology of the complement system and its effect on complement pathways on synaptic pruning in the context of aging and Alzheimer's.Currently, I'm researching the role of immune cells (microglia and macrophages) in mouse models for Alzheimer's. Also, using the Merscope technique to evaluate microglial/macrophage genes in human brain samples on a spatial scale along the tissues.Previous experience investigating one or more of the following areas: cellular proteostasis mechanisms, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial function/homeostasis, bioenergetic, and synaptic plasticity. I love to generate new ideas and devise feasible solutions to broadly relevant problems. My supervisors and colleagues would describe me as a driven, resourceful individual who maintains a positive, proactive attitude when faced with adversity. Specific fields of interest include biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.Highlights from my skills and experience include:• An established record of independent experimental design and execution resulting in high-quality data and multiple publications in high-impact journals.• Experienced in molecular/cell biology, with various cell culture systems and cellular assays.• Expertise in the generation and characterization of mouse models of immune system dysfunction and Alzheimer’s disease.• Experienced in imaging of synapses in the brain with advanced microscopy techniques. • Effective written and oral communication skills evidenced by success in grant funding, teaching/mentoring students, and presentations at major conferences.• Top technique skills: cell culture (macrophages, microglia/astrocytes/neurons), hippocampal/cortex slices), western blot, ELISA, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, qRT-PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, advanced microscopy (confocal and STED), mouse work (IP/IV injections, stereotaxic injections, behavior tasks)• AAV administration in vivo.
