Space Systems Research EngineerRomanian Inspace Engineering (Rise) Apr 2024 - PresentBucharest, Romania1. Olaf: ESA NAVISP contract to investigate navigation technologies for a shield nanosatellite that will protect a larger, more valuable space asset from space debris and meteoroid impacts. • Used space debris modelling tools (DRAMA, MASTER, DAS, ORDEM) to perform risk assessments and damage analyses for candidate mission scenarios; used Bash and Python to automate the analysis for all orbit classes in LEO.• Devised space debris mitigation strategies by computing collision probabilities, re-entry risk, orbital lifetime, collision avoidance manoeuvre rates for a variety of space missions in LEO-GEO.• Currently investigating state-of-the-art technologies for autonomous navigation, formation flying, space debris detection and tracking, performing collision avoidance and debris removal manoeuvres.2. Corvus: national contract to design, build, and test a 6U CubeSat with a telecommunications payload. • Involved in the mission design, systems engineering process: technical documentation writing, requirements validation and verification, flow-down from system to subsystem level, trade-off analysis, preparing and conducting assembly and integration plans, activities, and reports.• Developed a software demonstrator to simulate the operations of the payload.• Performed STK simulations for the orbit propagation, coverage and link budget analyses.3. DropCoal: ESA contract to design, build, and test the hardware device for 2 fluid mechanics experiments set to be launched to the International Space Station and the Nyx capsule in 2024. • Participated in the thermal and vibration testing campaign of the hardware: conducted the required payload functional tests, ensured compliance with the environmental test procedures.4. Pioneer: prepared a technical proposal for the high-level definition of a low-cost spacecraft platform for a Mars mission planned by ESA in the 2030-2040 timeframe. -
Master'S Research Student - Cubesat DesignUcl Sep 2022 - Sep 2023London, England, United KingdomFor my Master’s project I designed a 2U CubeSat aimed at solar physics measurements in the ultraviolet. I employed a system engineering approach and completed the following tasks:• Requirement definition and maintenance: deconstructed high-level requirements into mission, system and subsystem requirements; • Mission analysis and design: simulated a LEO mission on a dawn/dusk Sun-synchronous orbit;• Subsystem design: communications, electrical power, ADCS, on-board data handling, thermal control, payload;• Budget analyses: power, link, data, mass, volume budgets;• Trade-off evaluation: for orbit type and subsystem design options;• Payload performance modelling and testing: made observations from the ground with a spectrometer;• 3D CAD model of the satellite (using COTS components).I was awarded the UCL MAPS Innovation and Enterprise Student Prize for highlighting the potential societal and economic impact of my project. -
Research Placement - Stellar PhysicsUcl Jul 2022 - Sep 2022London, England, United Kingdom• I worked with Prof. Jay Farihi’s research group at UCL on detecting starspots and signs of magnetic activity on the surface of white dwarfs. • This involved writing a Python script to automate the data analysis for 520 DQ stars. I used satellite data from TESS (the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), and I gained experience in time-series analysis by computing Lomb-Scargle periodograms to examine the photometric variability of the stars.• I discovered 3 new periodically variable DQ-type white dwarfs, one of which had 2 asymmetric spots. -
Python Developer InternshipUcl Jul 2021 - Sep 2021London, England, United Kingdom• I developed a user-friendly Python program for the teaching and assessment of 300 first-year students in a practical course at the UCL observatory. My work was essential in moving this mandatory part of the course online during the coronavirus pandemic.• I created an interactive image processing and aperture photometry tool in Python. I started from an older experiment which guided students to estimate the age of the universe by analyzing images of Cepheid variables taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, and I creatively simulated it in a Jupyter Notebook.• I attended weekly meetings with 2 supervisors, during which we established common goals and objectives, and negotiated on how to transform their vision into a technical solution.
