About Andrej Shemet
It was already in high school when my interest for organic chemistry aroused. My ambition to become a synthetic chemist prompted me to move to the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main for my undergraduate studies. In my undergraduate studies, I was deeply fascinated by organic chemistry courses with a special emphasis on chemical synthesis. It was this fascination that prompted me to join the group of Prof. Dr. Erick M. Carreira at ETH Zurich. During my doctoral studies I had the opportunity to work on diverse branches of organic chemistry projects. Thereafter, I joined the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Dirk Trauner as a Swiss National Science Foundation fellow as a postdoctoral student. I was involved in the total synthesis of highly complex polyketide natural products. Also, I was working on several projects at the interface of chemistry and biology. Our team developed photoresponsive Eg5 kinesin inhibitors to enable modulation between states of high and low biological activity solely through the action of light. During my education, I was allowed to work within a larger and interdisciplinary team of scientists as well as performing research projects individually. Within these projects I acquired extensive skills in route planning, optimization and executing chemical reactions on milligram to multigram scale using state-of-the-art synthetic organic chemistry. Additionally, I had the chance to mentor chemistry students in the course of their undergraduate research projects. From these experiences, I have proved my ability to work and communicate within a team and demonstrated my independent and goal-oriented work habits. In addition, during the time I spent in Germany and Switzerland, I was able to gain perfect command of German both orally and in writing. My obliging, positive and communicative character allowed me during all stages of my career in Germany, Switzerland, and the US to rapidly integrate into a new environment. I'm looking forward to further develop myself as an individual and as a professional scientist.
