Andre Perry's research focuses on race and structural inequality, education, and economic inclusion. Perry’s recent scholarship at Brookings has analyzed Black-majority cities and institutions in America, focusing on valuable assets worthy of increased investment. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities, which will be released by Brookings Institution Press in May 2020 and is currently available through pre-order.

Andre Perry is a David M. Rubenstein Fellow in the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on race and structural inequality, community engagement, education, economic inclusion and workforce development.Perry has been a founding dean, professor, award-winning journalist, and activist in the field of education. In 2013, Perry founded the College of Urban Education at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, MI.Prior to his stint in Michigan, he was an associate professor of educational leadership at the University of New Orleans and served as CEO of the Capital One-University of New Orleans Charter Network.Since 2013, Perry’s column on educational equity has appeared in the Hechinger Report, a nonprofit news organization focused on producing in-depth education journalism. Perry also contributes to TheRoot.com and the Washington Post. Perry’s views, opinions and educational leadership have been featured on CNN, PBS, National Public Radio, The New Republic and NBC.Perry served on Louisiana Governor-elect John Bel Edward’s K-12 education transition committee in 2015 as well as New Orleans Mayor-elect Mitch Landrieu’s transition team as its co-chair for education in 2010.A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Perry earned his Ph.D. in education policy and leadership from the University of Maryland College Park.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academics and Provost, the Founding Dean is responsible for planning and launching Davenport’s new College of Urban Education. The Dean serves as the chief architect and advocate for the College, building relationships within the University and collaborations with external constituencies in order to build a program that will be a pioneer in urban education. The Institute assesses the success of post-Katrina education reforms and also creates enrichment opportunities for students in the metro area. Through action research projects, the associate director engages a large number of dedicated advocates, stakeholders and policymakers to ensure that all students have access to an excellent education. The primary responsibility of this position is to implement the PK-16 educational process for the charter school network. The Associate Dean assumes the responsibility of working with the New Beginnings Schools Foundation Board of Directors in developing and implementing their strategic plan. The Associate Dean assists faculty in the development of institutes and coursework to serve the New Orleans charter school community. The Associate Dean supervises and evaluates the Executive Director of Charter Schools and school leaders. This position is responsible for developing partnerships with pertinent community businesses and non-profit organizations, universities, schools, neighborhood associations and churches to help Network schools meet educational objectives. Other responsibilities include overseeing the research and assessment program for Network schools; identify and garner state, federal and private resources to meet the education and administrative needs of the Network; develop and administer a public relations strategy and represent the Network as chief media spokesperson; advocate policy that positively impacts educational, familial, and community outcomes; and assume full faculty duties for the University.
