As an educator, scholar, and performer, I specialize in the art, popular, and traditional music of Guatemala, Latin America, and U.S-Latinx music. I have published my written work as author, co-author, and translator in peer-reviewed journals, reference works, and edited anthologies, and presented papers at regional, national, and international conferences of musicology, ethnomusicology, cultural studies, and Latin American studies in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.I teach a range of courses, from general introductory courses on music appreciation and world music cultures to specialized graduate seminars in musicology and ethnomusicology. While based in the UTRGV School of Music, I routinely collaborate with various university departments and programs, including anthropology and social work. I'm currently a faculty affiliate of Gender and Women Studies and Mexican American Studies. I supervise undergraduate and graduate research, including Master's theses in ethnomusicology. As a performer, I have participated in ensembles of Western classical, World Music/Ethnomusicology, and popular music ensembles. I have extensive experience in choral music as a singer, arranger, and conductor. I have played in the Latin Marimba ensemble Maderas de Comitán (Arizona State University), the Caribbean Ensemble (University of Texas at Austin), African Drumming Ensemble (University of Texas Pan-American), and Javanese gamelan (Arizona State and University of Texas at Austin). I currently play covers of English and Spanish rock and pop songs with the UTRGV faculty band Minör Revisiöns.
