Andrés Cano is a seasoned public policy strategist with over 15 years of service in state and local government. As the former Minority Leader in the Arizona House of Representatives, Andrés served Tucson's District 20 from Nov. 2018 to 2023, playing a pivotal role in negotiating a $17.8 billion bipartisan budget approved by Governor Katie Hobbs in 2023.During his tenure in office, Andrés championed water conservation and climate resiliency as the Ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Natural Resources, Energy, & Water. He also fought for increased funding to Arizona’s public schools as the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Ways & Means. His leadership extended to his role as the House Chair of the Arizona Latino Legislative Caucus between 2020 and 2022.From 2020 to 2023, Andrés served as Director of the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund, a philanthropic initiative of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. He successfully secured vital funding, substantially increasing the Fund's annual grants to local non-profits fighting against anti-LGBTQ+ extremism,and significantly growing its endowment.Before his legislative career, Andrés was a senior aide to Pima County Supervisor Richard Elías (2012-2018), focusing on budget analysis, public health, and environmental policy. He led initiatives aimed at juvenile detention reform and developed strategies to combat HIV/AIDS in Southern Arizona's Latino communities.His early involvement in politics was marked by his presidency at the Young Democrats of Arizona during his college years, and his subsequent roles on the boards of the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (2019-2021) and the Progressive Turnout Project's Fellowship Advisory Board (2021-2022).Andrés' commitment to community service has earned him accolades from the Center for the Future of Arizona (Emerging Leader, 2016), the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (40 Under 40, 2017), and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (Young Alumnus Award, 2020).A testament to his resilience and determination, Andrés, raised by a single mother, leveraged Arizona’s public education system as a ladder to success, becoming a first-generation college graduate in 2014. Ten years later, he graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School with a Master in Public Administration.
