In addition to my salaried employment I have been involved in all sorts of projects, most of them involving the media, information technology, corporate intelligence or politics. An exception was the foundation of Kaffibarinn — a hip Reykjavík café/bar — which I co-founded in 1993 and sold in 1997.MediaApart from my editorial work, covering just about every desk but sports, I’ve been involved in the media business in various other ways. Launching new titles was a speciality for a time. I was a correspondent/stringer for the Associated Press, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report early in my career. I reported for the Financial Times in and around the financial crisis of 2008.Information TechnologyI didn’t start using computers until I finished college (classics), but then I found out — much to my surprise — that I was rather good with them, which in those days made you a ‘whiz kid’. When the Web took off, I was eminently ready for it due to my experience in the publishing business which made the Web a breeze. I'm a terrible programmer, but I can do a little scripting and am fairly good at reading code and hunting down bugs. I’ve done some consulting, mostly for print media, designing and specifying workflow systems, as well as lecturing on IT and publishing at PTS (now Technical College Reykjavík). In the early days of the Web I did quite a bit of public speaking and evangelising on IT matters.PoliticsI’ve been involved in politics since my school days, mostly within the conservative/libertarian Independence Party in Iceland, joining the Tories when studying and later living in England. I have taken part in numerous political campaigns, primaries, local and national.
