Andrew Spann Email and Phone Number
I use computer simulations to help engineers sort through the large heap of parameters that they could potentially alter in an R&D process and find the most important changes to improve system performance based on an understanding grounded in fundamental physics and engineering.I am a recognized expert in COMSOL Multiphysics®, having taught the official COMSOL Multiphysics® training class "Multiphysics Analysis for Medical Devices Using COMSOL Multiphysics" and presented an official COMSOL webinar for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).I have a long history of solving open-ended nonlinear problems. I have the greatest record in the history of the international COMAP Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and placed in the top 10 teams of Microsoft College Puzzle challenge 5 times between undergrad and graduate school, with 3 mutually exclusive sets of different teammates. I was an author and editor for the 2015 MIT Mystery Hunt and 538's The Riddler column ran my puzzle on election day 2016.

PartnerVeryst Engineering, Llc Jul 2022 - Sep 2024Needham, Massachusetts, United StatesVeryst is a consulting firm founded by former MIT faculty. I perform simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics® and Ansys Fluent which combine multiple layers of physics. Projects span a wide range of applications including medical devices, microfluidics, energy storage systems, chemical reactors, industrial equipment, and household appliances. -

Postdoctoral FellowThe University Of Texas At Austin Oct 2014 - Oct 2016Austin, TexasFluid simulations guiding the industrial scale-up of roll-to-roll nanoimprint lithography processes. These simulations determine optimal photoresist drop patterns and predict the maximum throughput in roll-to-roll nanomanufacturing processes for creating flexible printed electronics targeted at applications where the manufacturing bottleneck is large surface area rather than small feature size. This work is done in conjunction with UT Austin's Nanomanufacturing Systems for Mobile Computing and Mobile Energy Technologies (NASCENT) NSF Engineering Research Center. Biofluids research involving tightly confined vesicles.
