Assistant Cataloging Librarian

Shreveport, Louisiana, Us

As a cataloger, my job was to take materials that the library had received/purchased and then make them accessible to patrons in an online database by creating or modifying bibliographic records that contained descriptive metadata detailing basic information on an item, Making it discoverable within the library's online catalog as a new resource or additional copy. As a cataloger, I processed about 175 carts of materials, creating database records for over 17,500 items. The item types I cataloged include Regular adult books of multiple genres, Non-fiction books, Large print books of multiple genres, Juvenile Books, Picture books, Juvenile readers and non-fiction books, Young adult fiction and non-fiction books, Playaways, Reference materials, Graphic novels, DVDs both films and TV series, Music CDs, Audiobooks, Blu Rays, and Genealogy Materials. When cataloging these materials, I followed a process where I looked for records within a cataloging database, selected one, and then edited the available metadata to meet the standards of the Shreve Memorial Library. If I could not find a record then I would create a new one as needed following the libraries cataloging guidelines. When all the records had been edited and reviewed by my supervisor, the labels for the items were then printed and the records uploaded to the catalog. The items were then passed onto another member for further processing. Occasionally, there were projects within the department where we worked collaboratively to get backlogged materials out. Projects included cataloging a backlog of DVD films and TV series and focusing on a set collection of materials piled up and requested by patrons. These projects helped me to improve my cataloging skills and get older materials out of the department. While working in this position, I continued to develop my Taxonomy skills and gained more experience working with Integrated Library Systems and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Practicum Student

Stow, Ohio, Us

In my role at the library, I assisted library patrons by providing training, education, and assistance with the library's computers and locating different resources throughout the library environment. When teaching patrons about the library computers, I frequently instructed people on how to access online cataloging systems to research and find desired items. During my practicum, I learned about the different departments in a public library and observed how work is performed in them. This included learning more about how the circulation department works, how book clubs at a public library function, how the children's department works, the procedures surrounding notary and passport services offered at the library, and the processes that tech services follow to prepare items for the library collection.During my time there, I helped and participated in a previously planned Harry Potter night where I learned how library programs function and the planning and work required to succeed. At the end of the practicum, I created a website detailing everything I had done, reflecting on my experiences, and drawing conclusions on what I had done. I also learned how Integrated Library Systems work and led a project where I worked with the local history librarian to digitize several rare films, preserving them for future generations to view and enjoy.

Student Server Assistant

Wooster, Oh, Us

Worked within multiple dining halls, helping to serve food and maintain the dish-washing area of the kitchen. Before opening the dining hall, any leftover materials from lunch/meal prep were washed and put away or utilized by the kitchen staff as soon as they were dry. Brought in the dishes from the main dining room and washed them by rinsing them off and putting them through the dishwasher. Once the dishes had been run, they would be put on carts and taken back out to the dining area. At the end of the night, any remaining dishes were put through the dishwasher, and then serving utensils and trays used during food preparation and serving would be washed, and then put away. Each shift ended with the dishwasher being drained, cleaned, and shut off for the next day's use.
