Over a long career in Financial Markets I discovered my niche early. I am the one who gets passed the ball others find hard to hold. As a Financial Markets problem solver one of my key attributes is helping to identify problems and work actively to minimise their impact. My vast international network of peers, regulators and industry bodies help me to ensure the business at least understands what is market best practice even if they chose to diverge from it.Post GFC, Westpac sought me out to become Head of CPM Trading. I was managing a multi billion dollar portfolio of Credit Derivatives and a set of synthetic CDOs that were valued at a fraction of their principal amount. This was a storm never before seen in CPM or the credit derivative market and the team and I turned a hedging business into a strong revenue earner.I have been Business Lead for an all encompassing OTC Derivative Reform Project; Traded, Structured and Distributed Fixed Income and FX over the various tumult of the last 35 years; originated and traded Asset Backed Securities, and been Head of Trading for Westpac's Credit Portfolio Management business. I have also been Director of an ASX listed Hedge Fund of Funds vehicle and co-authored the world's first ever listed CDO Prospectus.The current focus on cost minimisation leads to businesses stripping away layers of experience, often at the expense of future revenues but almost always leaving gaps in knowledge. My wide experience and demonstrated drive to adapt to change helps to plug gaps that appear between management expectations and execution.Keeping employees engaged and optimistic can also be a challenge. Helping to bring forward the best in my colleagues through active mentoring has always been a focus for me. Hierarchy is important, but cooperative investment in each other is a mark of a successful workforce. I help my colleagues focus on the value and values they bring to work each day. The most satisfying feature of my career has been its diversity. This has brought me the satisfaction of drawing on experience and themes to round out solutions, whether they be business architecture, trading strategies or client needs. I have traded a myriad of markets and conditions. I have focused on capital preservation and innovative investment opportunities.
