About Andrew Bennett

My roots lie in applied behavior analysis; I have practiced since 2014 and I became a BCaBA in November 2022. I have extensive experience as a clinical RBT as well as an assistant consultant for public school teachers. I spent four years at Behavior TLC learning ABA skills and spent the next four years at UHCL working side-by-side with hundreds of special education teachers over four years, then brought them together with one scintillating year of experience in the Connecting the Dots branch of UHCL’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. My interest in clinical work was re-awakened and combined with my awareness and appreciation for my own lived experience as autistic. From the very beginning of my career, I have advocated for equitable treatment and dignity for autistic people, and described and demonstrated the originality and brilliance of the autistic mind alongside its challenges. In my public advocacy experience, I have appeared on YouTube and Apple podcasts such as Autism Knows No Borders, Exceptional Shell, Ryan's Voice, Joy and Peace Podcast, and In God's Image, and presented in Czechia, France, Indonesia, and even my home state of Texas, through Telehealth World ABA Project, Global Autism Project, Houston Oasis, and Action Behavior Centers. My perspectives on autism and the meaning of “otherness” and belonging, are influenced by my travels to other countries, fascination with foreign languages, cultures, and travel, and noticing the common thread of human experience still found everywhere. My central message is that autism is just another of the many ways humans are “different, but not less” - deserving understanding and respect, that can be cultivated. Every adventure teaches me that it’s OK to feel like an “alien” – because everyone is an alien somewhere. My clinical and interpersonal work draws from these insights, leading to a highly person-centered, compassionate care approach to getting to know my clients and colleagues, and the flourishing of a highly logical and systematic autistic brain thanks to ABA's laws, rules, and data-driven approach. Supervisors tend to recognize my abilities in writing and giving feedback on ABA programming, efficient data organization, bonding with clients and parents through empathic listening and experience sharing, and utilizing pattern-based psychological knowledge and real-life experience to detect others' motivations, needs, fears, and subliminal messages, in order to build rapport, overcome barriers, and optimize service delivery.

  • Mindful Behavior Llc
    Peer Group Facilitator And Presenter
Mindful Behavior Llc Apr 2023 - Present
I present at monthly peer groups for certified behavior-analytic continuing education credits with a neurodiversity-affirming approach to modern behavior analysis, in collaboration with an all-neurodivergent team. We rotate presenters, content creators, and facilitators across the months of the year, combining a lecture format with small-group breakouts to discuss how to tackle current issues in the behavior-analytic field through a neuro-affirming lens, and how to understand the progress made towards neuro-affirming approaches in behavior analysis. My most common themes have been the dignity of the individual, the objective neurological basis of the Autistic experience, detecting and overcoming masking with a trauma-informed lens, and ways to steer programming away from an ableist mindset.

  • University Of Houston-Clear Lake
    Behavioral Therapist
    University Of Houston-Clear Lake Sep 2018 - Aug 2022
    Houston, Texas, United States
As a BCBA's assistant in the ABA Academy for Problem Behavior program from the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities from 2018-2022, I designed and presented interactive lectures to over 400 special education teachers across 11 school districts about functions of problem behavior, ABC data, and function-based interventions. We used Scott et al. 2018’s computer-based training model to train teachers in ABC data and training other staff, and combined full- or half-day presentations with classroom visits to observe problem behavior and collaborate with teachers and paraprofessionals to develop effective, socially valid interventions. Our COVID virtual services lasted until May 2021, and we maintained an average teacher satisfaction score of 5.1 of 6 points across 48 teachers. During a summer workshop in 2019, I led the computer-based training wing and trained a staff member to supervise teachers, answer questions, and grade teacher performance.I conducted Telehealth training in Cameroon through Loukia Tsami's Telehealth ABA World Project. The client learned to use a picture exchange system at 100% procedural fidelity across three caregivers and became completely toilet-trained. I displayed adaptability in high-pressure situations, cultural competency through translating French-English, and clinical judgment and interpersonal skills. In the Connecting the Dots division from 2021-22, I provided direct ABA therapy and case management as an RBT, involving skills and behavioral assessments (FAST, VB-MAPP, FA) for seven clients from 4 to 8 years old, under three different graduate therapists. I trained three undergraduate students to conduct assessments and collect data, and compiled a parent resource list and an ABA article database on 32 topics for incoming UHCL students. I utilized my autistic lived experience to advocate for clients' optimal treatment, educate parents about autism, and give recommendations for neurodiversity-affirming practices.
  • Lonestar Lend

    Lonestar Lend Aug 2019 - Jun 2020
    Houston, Texas, United States

I was required to visited 20 different sites, spanning clinics, support groups, social activities, or other events attended by individuals with disabilities. I lent my perspective as an autistic adult to weekly seminars on current issues in the disability world. As part of my year-long service learning project, I taught and facilitated Lee College’s “Sphere of Safety” eight-week course with three other LEND trainees, providing a safe and supportive environment for college students with neurodevelopmental disabilities to discuss experiences with sexual assault and abuse, societal mechanisms and systems that enable and maintain them, and coping strategies and resources. We were the first and only Lee College student group to move online during the COVID-19 pandemic, even increasing in its success and satisfaction ratings thanks to our group's management, teamwork, presentation, and leadership skills throughout. In recognition of the work I did with Sphere of Safety and the contributions I had made to the cohort's understanding of and appreciation for the talents and insight of people with disabilities, I was awarded Akanksha Kamal Trainee of the Year 2019-2020.

I showed leadership skills by distributing a daily target mastery tracking sheet for three clients, that allowed staff to observe their ongoing progress towards target mastery and design sessions accordingly to ensure adequate practice of all targets and achieve optimal mastery rates.
