I worked collaboratively with other SAEs to work through the COVID era, thinking about solutions to limitations and planning for the future. Show less -

The ability to move large objects, quickly, through low amounts of wear and power gives the railway its purpose. As a Wheel Rail Interface Engineer, I was able to study, understand, and optimise parts of the railway that improved the maintenance, life cycle and cost of the system. I completed a large number of customer based projects understanding and predicting the rail damage through a programme called Track-Ex. Projects have included: understanding the optimum material for projects for customers on London North Eastern Route; saving 60% in whole life costs, completing modelling for the whole of the HS1 route to focus their maintenance and understand the impact of the arrival of new vehicles; Siemens Velaro, and saving £100k on recanting costs for a linespeed improvement study near Shrewsbury. I have also worked with design teams to improve designs and informed maintenance practices including the Wessex Capacity Programme.Over the last four years, I have also developed Track-Ex in VB language, improving the user interface, embedding new vehicles into the programme, and adding functionality, working on a curve register.I helped organise and deliver over 40 training courses for Track-Ex and Wheel-Rail Interface theory, which has had very positive feedback over the years. The course allows you to work through Track-Ex, but also instils some of the basic understanding of the outputs, which are directly related to the interface theory, and good modelling habits.I have also led 3 derailment investigation; by collecting evidence, analysing the geometry and writing reports to understand the root cause of the accident. This includes wheel and rail profile measurements, track geometry, and investigating and interrogating other data sources. Show less -

I wanted to gain experience in a route based function, with ‘local’ deliverables and budgets, and so I was able to plan and complete a secondment as a Project Engineer for 6 months.I completed a secondment as part of the Infrastructure Projects (IP) Track Development team, working through the early stages of the project until single design (Governance for Railway Investment Projects) GRIP stage 3 handover through to the end of Control Period 6 (CP6 - 2024). I completed design analysis on 4 projects, working through and understanding the impact on ongoing maintenance, gauging and assets. I reviewed PRS (Particular Requirements Specification) to understand the root causes of the renewal, and understand what the customer wanted. I was able to complete structure gauging analysis to understand the impact of moving assets on their operation, which included challenging some for their accuracy of root causes. Understanding the root cause is vital to ensure that the correct design changes are made to alleviate some of the damage. I successfully worked through collaborative works with drainage teams in 3 routes to combine projects to save possessions, time and planning costs, combining 2 projects and ensuring that drainage work was completed before track renewal. Phd Student (Switches And Crossing Investigation)Network Rail And Imperial College London Jan 2010 - Jun 2014I completed research monitoring the change in strain and displacements through in-service switches and crossings (S&C). I designed field instrumentation strategically through the S&C units from statistical analysis of GB infrastructure failures. I collected, converted and analysed trends throughout the project to understand how the units deteriorated.

Vehicle Track Interface EngineerNetwork Rail Jan 2009 - Jan 2010I collaborated with the Rail Safety and Standards Board on multiple projects, such as reviewing remediations against Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF), T613, and implementing the new P12 wheel profile, T603 and analysing their results. I was internal support for interface issues between wheels and rails, using Vampire Software and often worked on internal recommendations for maintenance. -
Graduate EngineerNetwork Rail Sep 2007 - Jan 2010I travelled around the company, focusing on maintenance of track and track related assets, before heading to Infrastructure & Investments (I&I). During the time in I&I, I worked on the Willesden Junction redesign, altering crossovers into a ladder formation, purchasing of necessary equipment and installation planning. After this time, I joined the Vehicle Track Systems Team, as a Vehicle Track Interface engineer.
