I worked with physics professor M. Shane Hutson in collaboration with the cell biology group of Dr. Andrea Page-McCaw to generate a computational Potts model of cell dynamics as commonly observed in the formation of epithelial syncytia. With my computational physics model, I sought to offer biologists an explanatory framework from which they might better infer how syncytia contribute to faster average healing times in the context of wound closure. The internship concluded with a talk where I presented my model and my findings. Working at Vanderbilt provided an exotic opportunity to straddle the line between disciplines by applying a stochastic-dynamic model commonly used in physics to a cell biological question. It was very eye-opening to see what kinds of questions my own discipline of physics can allow us to fruitfully examine outside of the field. I also had a lot of fun acquiring access to and learning how to use Vanderbilt's infamous supercomputer ACCRE for the execution of high-performance computing jobs.Funding for the internship and research was provided by the National Science Foundation and an NIH grant, respectively.
