As a water ski program staff member, I was responsible for equipment management and fitting, transferring participants to and from a wheel chair, sit ski or boat, and water rescues.

St Luke’s is an acute care in-patient rehabilitation center in Spokane, WA. As an intern, I observed patients during their occupational therapy sessions, assisted therapists with transfers and transported patients to and from their therapy sessions. The patients I observed were recovering from a wide range of injuries/conditions including: mild traumatic brain injuries, orthopedic surgeries, strokes, heart attacks, and spinal cord injuries.

Spokane, Washington Area

Parasport Spokane provides opportunities for athletes with disabilities to participate in sports such as wheelchair basketball, Track & Field, and strength and conditioning. As an intern I assisted with basketball practices and participated when there was a shortage in numbers. I accompanied the team to a tournament in Oregon and experienced the efforts required when traveling with adaptive athletes. I assisted with strength and conditioning by helping athletes transfer onto weight benches, spotting their form, and individually running stations during circuit training. I assisted athletes during track & field practice and ran with a visually impaired sprinter. I rode a bicycle alongside athletes when they were training for a 12K race in Spokane called Bloomsday, making sure that they were visible to the traffic on busy streets and stayed on course. Parasport Spokane hosted the Western Conference Wheelchair basketball Tournament and I helped set up for the event, kept score during games and assisted teams getting to and from the airport.

EXPAND stands for Exciting Programs Adventures and New Dimensions. It provides opportunities for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities to explore the world around them through recreation and leisurely activities. As an intern, I was fortunate enough to interact with a wide range of individuals who had varying types of disabilities and abilities. Some of the disabilities I came in contact with included: cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, spinal injuries, brain injuries, Down syndrome, autism, behavioral disorders and emotional disorders. I assisted with a water skiing program for individuals with physical disabilities and was responsible for equipment management and fitting, transporting participants to and from a wheel chair, sit ski or boat. Out on the water, I rode on the back of a jet ski behind the skier and jumped off to rescue skiers when they crashed and got them started again once they were situated back in their ski. Another program I assisted with was a day camp for young adults with developmental disabilities in which I accompanied participants in the swimming pool, educated them in personal hygiene and health, and worked on their social and interpersonal skills. Other programs I assisted with included: golf lessons for individuals with mild-traumatic brain injuries, yoga, bowling, softball and stand up paddle boarding for individuals with developmental disabilities. As well, I was assigned as an individual swim instructor for a 6 year old girl with autism. I was trained in proper transfer techniques as well as water rescue for individuals with physical disabilities. Problem solving was a skill that I developed and utilized throughout my internship as well as conflict resolution in social interactions. I was constantly in contact with people which allowed me to develop a greater awareness of the diversity in behavior and personal differences among individuals.

Fire Mountain Residential Treatment Center is program for troubled teens struggling with substance abuse, anger, family issues, school, and relationship issues. As an intern at Fire Mountain, I assisted in marketing as well as the therapy aspect of the business. In terms of marketing, I was responsible for maintaining and updating website pages using Word Press as well as maintaining their contact list using Constant Contact. I did market research on other treatment centers and made cold calls to gain information about their programs as a means to educate the owners of Fire Mountain on the teen treatment arena. I aided in the therapy realm by serving as a milieu therapist which involved creating an environment and community for patients during their time in treatment that provided role models and a sense of emotional support. I help patients with chores around the house, assisted with meal preparation, helped with projects such as building a half pipe skateboard ramp, and accompanied patients to narcotics anonymous meetings. I served as a supervisor and chaperone on wilderness trips and took the patients on hikes.

Responsibilities included food and beverage preparation and service. As a shift leader, I was responsible for managing 3-5 employees at a time and making sure that tasks were delegated and staff was working efficiently. I prepared and delivered food, took orders on the phone, opened up and closed the shop, took inventory of food and supplies, made food and supply orders, handled money, assigned break times and trained new employees.
