I have recently discovered Rust. I want something for systems software that I only need to code once for Mac, Windows, Linux and smart phones. Rust is the closest I can find. The fact that the first Rust project was developed on Mac and then compiled and ran on Windows will major headaches won me over! I have worked for more than a decade with C++ and I have always found it frustrating. It imposes constraints for little gain. C is always much clearer and cleaner. As is BCPL, but that’s about as far from Rust as you can get. I’ve used C++ to write clay shooting simulators, fax and email messaging systems, drivers for printers and scanners. Each of these spawned a number of iOS apps, and latterly ones for Android as well.Fax systems have taken up a lot of programming time, starting with a system written in C and x86 assembler running on MSDOS, or in spite of MSDOS. It then migrated to run under Windows 3.0.There have been plenty of Ruby development over the years too with websites for wildlife monitoring, primary school assessment and reporting, online OCR and ...Minor projects can be the most interesting too. Like using a DMX lighting network to control video projection, or using multiple photographs of objects to create 3D printable files - this one could be resurrected! In fact, I’d be delighted to see the DMX projector resurrected too.Current extra-curricula projects include data collection and mapping for wildlife monitoring in Kenya.Going forward, I would really like to find more projects linking software or hardware development and wildlife conservation.
