A leader in the field of translational research and precision medicine, Andrew K. Godwin is the Chancellors Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Sciences endowed Professor, the Division Director of Genomic Diagnostics, and the Deputy Director of the KU NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. In 2016 he founded the Kansas Institute for Precision Medicine which is currently supported by a ~$12M Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (P20 GM130423) grant from the NIGMS. He also founded the Center for Genetics Services and Health Equity, to address health disparities in medical underserved populations regionally and nationally. Godwin’s 30-year research career continues to focus on various aspects of both basic and translational research, with an emphasis on early detection of cancer, predictive and prognostic biomarkers, liquid biopsies based on extracellular vesicles, molecular therapeutics, companion diagnostics, clinical trials, cellular therapeutics, cancer immune microenvironment, and biosample ascertainment. He is an NIH/NIGMS/NCI funded investigator (continuously since his first faculty appointment at Fox Chase Cancer Center in 1993) and a highly published (over 550 manuscripts and scholarly review articles) and cited (>90,000; h-index of 141) scientist. Godwin is internationally recognized for his molecular biology/genetic studies of sarcoma (gastrointestinal stromal tumors and Ewing sarcoma), breast and ovarian cancer, and his efforts to help bridge the gap between basic and clinical science to improve patient care. Godwin leads the ovarian cancer working group at KUCC. He was named the Vice Chair for the Breast Translational Medicine subcommittee of the Southwest Oncology Group in 2018 and was appointed to the National Cancer Institute’s NCTN Core Correlative Sciences Committee in 2021. His contributions towards education and training was recognized when he was presented the KUMC School of Medicine Achievement Award for Mentoring Post-Docs in 2014, the KU Medical Center’s Faculty Investigator Research Award in 2015, the University of Kansas Cancer Center Director’s William Jewell Team Science Award in 2017, the KUCC Director’s Basic Science Award in 2018, the Chancellor’s Club Award in 2018, the Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Achievement Award in Biomedical Sciences in 2020 – the state higher education system’s most prestigious recognition for scholarly excellence, and the 2021 KU School of Medicine Excellences in Mentoring (Faculty) award. He has dedicated his scientific career to improving the care for patients diagnosed with cancer.
