I co-founded Ursa in 2015 and wore a lot of hats for a long time. My primary responsibilities now are to guide the development of the Ursa Health software platform, and to develop and refine the technical professional services that we offer to support the initial implementation of the software and its successful ongoing use. I'm also responsible for the successful delivery of those professional services by our data science and programming team; I also participate in that work personally where appropriate.My background is a bit unusual in that I've worked on both sides of the technical divide -- that is, I've been the one asking the questions, and the one responsible for developing the technical solution that marshals the data to answer that question. These two perspectives inform most of what I do at Ursa. I spend a lot of time thinking about database design that balances query performance with increasing the speed and reliability with which an analyst can turn an idea into a (bug-free) result. I spend what most people would probably consider an insane amount of time agonizing over what to name things.I don't think it has to be crazy at work. I feel very lucky to be working with such a sharp, good-natured team at Ursa.

My brief was to advise the administrator on issues related to measurement and evaluation, and to provide related guidance to major programs, such as the Partnership for Patients and the development of the Oregon Medicaid Waiver.

Started as software and database developer, later transitioned to work more directly related to health care -- in particular, how to measure the clinical and operational performance of health care organizations. Served as measurement lead for IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign and 5 Million Lives Campaign.
