Funded by a KK-Stiftelsen grand and industry partners, my role at Karlstads Universitet is to plan and implement a monitoring program to quantify the effects of dam removal on the Mörrumsån river in southern Sweden. Specific project goals include: - Collect and analyze benthic invertebrate samples to characterize benthic communities.- Use stable isotopes to reconstruct food webs above and below the dam.- Track juvenile Atlantic salmon during downstream migrations via radio telemetry.- Estimate genetic population dynamics (Nb:Nc ratios) for the Mörrumsån Atlantic salmon population. I have also collaborated on several telemetry projects with the Gävleborg county board to analyze acoustic and radio telemetric data.

In a collaboration between Concordia University (Dr. Dylan Fraser) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Dr. William Ardren), my project consisted of assessing multiple aspects of the Lake Champlain landlocked Atlantic salmon restoration program. Project goals included:- Identifying areas where the current salmon stocking protocols could be altered to improve spawner returns to stocked tributaries.- Create a lakewide genetic database for parentage based tagging of stocked juveniles.- Develop a citizen science program to collect tissue samples throughout the lake.- Develop new telemetric techniques to permit fine-scale localization of tagged spawners in high-energy sections of river.- Determine the extent to which a dietary thiamine deficiency affects upstream spawner migrations within the Lake Champlain Basin.

In collaboration with the Ontario MNR (Dr. Chris Wilson), my project investigated hatchery-wild hybridization within the Brook char populations in Algonquin Provincial Park, ON. Specific project goals included: - Quantifying the extent to which domesticated DNA has been integrated into wild Brook char populations.- Identifying anthropogenic and environmental correlates of hatchery-wild hybridization.- Experimentally assess the consequences of historic hybridization between hatchery and wild populations.

In the final year of my undergraduate degree I completed a 1-year independent research project on quantitative modeling techniques in fisheries sciences (Dr. John Post). The specific goals of this project were:- Use mark-recapture techniques to determine the abundance of rainbow trout populations in three interior B.C. lakes.- Use scale samples to identify the age distribution of samples trout populations.- Model population growth rates and responses to simulated fishing pressure.- Use modeling results to assess current angling regulations.
